I've now been on the namebrand Valium for about l0days, and I can see a definite difference in the strength as some Posters thought I would. I had to pay a lot of money even with a small contribution from my insurance co. Even with the doctor specifying on the RX that it was namebrand only 90pills 5mg cost over $l30! It really is better though. Anyone know how to get it for less money? I'll be losing the Rx part of my insurance, and it will really be high then. Does anyone know of a drug program for someone on Medicare disability? Fondly, Phillipa

Hi Phillipa!
How is your anxiety at the moment? Are you wanting to substitute your morning dose of generic diazepam with Valium?

For the Klonopin prescription you mentioned in another thread, did you get name brand or generic?

Generic purpak [spelling?]. Any thoughts on this? I think I know what you're thinking, but going back 30years to when I first experienced a panic attack valium is what enabled me to recover until it returned after my throid gland became hypro. Fondly, Phillipa

I have a short memory. The brandname is definitely superior. But, is Teva okay? I mean do they make valium? I'll be losing my medical drug portion of insurance at the end of the month and will have to pay full price anyway. I guess calling around is one way . Any other suggestions.? Fondly, Phillipa

Looking in the archives, the issue of generic vs. name brand Klonopin has been discussed a lot over the years. E.g. : http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/19990814/msgs/9940.html
At this point, my personal opinion is that I will always get the name brand of whatever benzo I'm prescribed.

My suggestion is that you search the archives for reports on the relative strengths of the various generics. It may be that you find the most cost effective one for you.
My concern is that there may be subtle differences beyond just strength to consider. E.g., maybe one formulation has an equal anxiolytic power as another, but has a different effect on general energy level, mood, motivation, etc.
(If you want to seriously try all the generic brands, look them up in the FDA's Electronic Orange Book:
http://www.fda.gov/cder/ob/default.htm, and shop around.)

And beyond the US generics, I recall someone saying a certain Canadian generic was also very good. Many Americans are using Canadian pharmacies to save money.
(This generic vs. name brand topic is kind of a crusade with me, as I experienced first-hand the difference, and wonder how many treatments fail due to patients being given ineffective generics when the name brand might have worked for them.)

In case anyone is interested........
In the UK, you can't get name-brand benzos on the National Health Service. Only generics are available. If you want the name-brand eg. Valium, you have to get a private prescription. Because of this, many of the well known name-brands have been discontinued completely in the UK eg. Ativan is no longer available here, only the generic lorazepam.
The only exception to the rule is clonazepam (Roche's Rivotril - Klonopin to you). For some reason, we don't have a generic clonazepam here.
I've never had the opportunity to try Valium, I've only ever taken generic diazepam. I'm not sure who the manufacturer was, probably APS, Berk, COX or DDSA.
