i take remeron in addition to zoloft. apart from helping me sleep (and thus calming me down generally) i haven't been able to figure out if it's brain chemistry alterations are really tangible. i know that i prefer to be on it, but is it really that effective as an AD? is a lower dose more effective or a higher (i know that its sedating features increase when the dosage is lowered).

I don't know of any reason why you would not want to target 45mg or higher of Remeron. Just watch for serotonin syndrome (a seemingly paradoxical effect from such a combination) as there are several anecdotal reports on Medline regarding the combinations of Remeron with an SSRI or lithium.
Wait for some more responses. Hopefully, someone will have personal experience with the combination.

I'm currently on l5mg of remeron at night for sleep with l0mg of valium. I also take zoloft and 5mg of valium in the am. I'm only taking 25mg of zoloft but I'm supposed to up it every few days til I reach l50mg. I've been afraid so far. How many mgs of zoloft are you taking and does it cause you any side effects. I know the pdoc will be mad if I don't up the dose. Fondly, Phillipa

Hello Phillipa - um, I am working towards 50mgs of Zoloft. Remeron, 30mgs, which provides glorious sleep. I am thinking about asking for Luvox, as the Zoloft is, after 2 weeks at 25, still very stimulating. Last night I had a minor panic attack after falling asleep on the couch. (although it could have been connected to the manner in which i woke up, or maybe it was dream related). anyway, i think i will stick with the remeron (i am a grad student and have coverage right now which provides for about 90 percent of the cost of the meds), but as for an SSRI i don't know. anyone know about the serotonin activators? essentially i want an SSRI drug that counters my rumination, and subsequent anxiety, but doesn't have too many side effects. it may be that they will never develop such a perfect drug. CBT is so slow!

Hello,

I've heard quite a few people talk about restlessness and/or irritability when taking high doses of Remeron.

I'm on 45mg of Remeron, and I find that it calms down my busy brain and disconnects me from suicidal impulses. For me, Remeron has been a lifesaver.

Craig, I don't notice anything at the 25mgzoloft dose. I could probably tolerate the 50mg okay, but I want to wait awhile due to cost. Luvox was a great drug for me, it relaxed me, and my OCD tendencies seemed to go away. My new pdoc says the zoloft is supposed to do the same thing. Fondly, Phillipa

I had remeron added last fall at 30 mg and within about 10 days noticed a great relief from depression symptons and better sleep, I was also on effexor xr which had pooped out plus I wanted off of it anyway. I eventually switched to Lexapro, which seems to help some with the depression, as it of course as always creeps back in, and a small amount with anxiety..I still rely on Klonopin...it has been a life saver...anyway....I have had two psy docs. try to get me to go up to 60 mg of Remeron, when I have complained about not being depression free...I have tried 4 times at 45 mg and once at 60 mg...I slept fitfully and woke with the worst hangover type feelings and a splitting headache...so I stay at 30............
