Buspar-related issues...

Posted by RWWooddall on March 8, 2005, at 1:31:33

Hi all.

I'm a 20 year old male who was officially diagnosed with an anxiety disorder about eight years ago, not medicated, and then re-diagnosed with mixed clinical depression/anxiety disorder following a "nervous breakdown" episode about two years ago in May. I was prescribed Fluoxetine (generic Prozac) by my psychiatrist, and have improved on that medication for almost two years. However, my psychiatrist, as he has managed my medication, has noted that I still have some complaints about my anxiety, generally ruminating thoughts about my health or my future etc. In the past two years my anxiety seemingly has not be significant enough for me to alter my medication, but my psychiatrist had suggested, if i wanted, very low doses of an atypical anti-psychotic like risperdal (partially to help me sleep, which wasn't and hasn't ever been an issue so I'm not sure why that was reccomended), or another anxiety medication. This past December I met with him and decided to take the plunge with another medication to gently ease my anxiety a little further, so I chose Buspar, which I had read about and felt comfortable going on. I have so far been on 15 mg daily for about half a month, and the rest of these past two months 30 mg daily. Side affects seemed minimal at first - I once had a sort of lightheaded spell on the 15 mg just as I began taking it but that subsided when I took it before bed rather than with my Prozac in the morning. However, recently I've noticed this strange increase in what I can only describe as a weird "sensation." This tends to occur when I'm lying down or sitting, and is either a feeling of "lifting" and tactile sensation on my right side, or, more often, when I'm playing a computer game or surfing the internet I'll sometimes get this sense of both external sound (like the computer game's music) and my own thoughts becoming "loud" and "resonating" in my head for a period of five minutes or so. This seems to have only increased as the weeks go by.

Anyway, that was very long-winded. I HAVE felt benefit on Buspar when spells have not occurred in terms of lowering my anxiety slightly, but these spells are getting kind of annoying. Has anyone else experienced this, and if not or so should I consider other medications with my psychiatrist, and if so which kinds? Thanks.

- Reed

I have not used Buspar for an extensive period, but I have not heard anyone complain of any side effects at all, nor heard that there could be odd physical or auditory sensations in relation to it. Maybe someone else can comment.

I had something similar happen to me while on Lexapro so I have no doubts it could possibly be the Buspar.

Sometimes when I was sitting or laying on the couch (while on the Lexapro), I felt like my body was being "pushed" or was tilting more to the left side.. It's hard to describe.

I also noticed sounds were much more pronounced. Many times I can remember almost yelling at my husabnd to stop talking so loud at me (and he would look at me like "what in the world are you talking about??).

I could not stand to have the tv on if I was not watching it- I could not stand to have music playing in the background, etc.. It's like I had sensory overload or something.

Even at times when people from church would want to hug me, I would CRINGE--- and I'm the queen mother of huggers.

So I think these meds can effect you in weird ways like you describe.

It may go away with time but if it's so annoying and uncomfortable that you can't wait, talk to your doctor.

Don't think you are crazy though- I believe these things are really manifesting becuase of the medication. I know WEIRD stuff happened to me while on the meds.

I never heard of a side effect like this from Buspar. Maybe you should speak with your pdoc and see if he/she feels you should try something else. Fondly, Phillipa
