Hi, I'm new to posting and have been reading posts for several months. I was wondering if anyone knew if medical professionals can be taking antidepressants and still work with patients?
Thanks!

Yes, they can take antidepressants, just like anyone else.

Yes, I was an RN on a psych, and about a half of the nurses took AD's. The pdocs probably did too. Anyway they wouldn't show up in a drug test that I know of. And, it takes one who has experienced depression to help someone who is suffering with it. You have to walk in their shoes. Fondly, Phillipa

I certainly hope they don't hesitate to. Medical professionals have all the same problems as we do, I certainly would not want to go to a surgeon who is constantly ruminating about his problems...nor a psychiatrist for that matter. They should be first on the list---
As a past therapist. I think it is important to make sure you are doing absolutely OK and do what you need to to be OK.
Would you hesitate to consult a doctor who has diabetes about your diabetes? Id think she/he'd have more insight and sensitivity than a doctor who does not know what it is like.
A psychiatrist who has had medication him or herself would have more empathy RE side effects, etc....

Yes, I had an PDOC who told me she was taking Zoloft.
You should read the book "Undercurrents A Life Beneath the Surface" by Martha Manning to get an interesting view of an psychologist who goes through depression (and ECT treatment). She is a great writing. Very witty. I love when she writes about getting a new room-mate during the night the at the hospital and that it is a high-school cheerleader. She wonders what is worse - a depressed cheerleader or a depressed psychologist. It's one of my favourite books and I actually had the honour of hearing her speak.

PS - sorry about the long answer to a short question.

Thanks a lot Maxine, I'll print that off for my doctor.
If my doctor won't listen to my requests for Lamictal, I shall be finding another doctor!

I know a lot who take something. There are also surgeons (one took benzodiazepines, the other some glasses of beer before operations). An assistant told me the surgeon who took benzodiazepines was very capable to his job (he presumably had some tremor without the benzos).
Another doc who I know, (psychiatrist) take sometimes antidepressants and he did not hesitate to tell me that.
This is the end of the thread.
