Provigil for Depression/Motivation/Energy

Posted by awatts on January 16, 2005, at 13:05:10

I am about to try Provigil as monotherapy for major depression. Since the only AD that has ever worked for me (Effexor XR) caused complete sexual disfunction, augmenting an AD with Provigil might not make a lot of sence for me.

Have any readers tried Provigil for depression? If so, what dosages did you try and what were the results? What other meds were you taking that might have interacted. Any insight would be appreciated.

It's a long, ugly story, but for a while Provigil was the only thing I was on. It did boost my mood, and brighten my life a good deal, with virtually no side effects. As far as I'm concerned, it's a miracle drug. While it was the only thing I was taking, my depression was still problematic, as was my anxiety, but it actually seemed to reduce anxiety, too.

Right now, I'm taking it with Cymbalta and Wellbutrin. I stopped the Provigil for a while, but amotivation from SOMETHING I was on was a problem, and the Provigil helped that a lot.

Good luck with it, and let us know how it goes for you. Again, as far as I'm concerned, Provigil is little short of miraculous, and I am convinced that Provigil is my friend.

i think provigil could be MY friend, too! ;) i've been trying to get my p-doc to try me on provigil for amotivation when i take SSRIs or their kin. she steadfastly refuses, perhaps because i'm BP II. i've been reading very good things about it as an augmentation strategy. thanks for sharing your experience. i think i'll look for a p-doc who's at least willing to let me try it. alternatively, maybe wellbutrin to augment an SSRI makes sense, though it didn't in combo with celexa for me. so tired of this treadmill...

awatts-- provigil was good for me, but i'm not sure i would recommend it alone for depression. i took it in combination with lithium and zoloft b/c i'm dx'd BP II. provigil was good for motivation and energy in a subtle way. i would start projects i had put off, and i didn't have a high, but i had energy enough to see them through. my mood might've been better, but it was stable at that time already, so i can't say. it also has a long half life, the longest of the long-release stimulant drugs. i think adderall and ritalin work better for me than provigil, but with my problems, the immediate release ones cause too many ups and downs that are bad for BP. i think provigil is worth a try... it's also very expensive. i took 200mg a day.
