Best med for alcohol and sweeties craving

Posted by tex1 on January 18, 2005, at 4:30:21

Dear all, it's been a while since I haven't posted in this forum. Now things have changed abit...My new problem is alcohol and sweeties abuse and craving. Am bipolar and now I'm on 300 mg Depakote twice a day and 10mg of clomipramine. Unfortunately every night I drink 0.75 liter or so of white wine and then crave for sweeties...I'm sick tired of this situation because at work I feel numb...with loss of concetration and sleepy. I've always beleived that under the alcohol abuse there is a depression and/or anxiety problem. So I ask to you if anyone knows a good med for this kind of problem (looks like OCD maybe...).
Thank you in advance to all who'll answer.

I have heard that Topamax helps with alcohol craving, and it can suppress appetite. My alcohol craving, however, is psychological in nature by now (I don't suffer physical withdrawls when I stop drinking), which is a horse of a different colour.

Good luck - and nice to see you. Take care.

>Compulsions like alcohol abuse and anxiety disorders often go together, and many people with anxiety problems self-medicate with alcohol. Maybe you need to ask yourself: am i drinking because i'm anxious, or am i anxious because i'm drinking?
>By the way, i've been taking depakote for 3 years now and have experienced a craving for sweets. Maybe you should try the extended release version so you can take it all at nighttime.

Mine too partly cloudy...I know that substance abuse is a typical feature of bipolar patients, as I am. I just can't loose the appetite of that stimulating/sedative effect of alcohol though... Sometimes I just take it as a med. I arrived even to swallow alcohol at 90 degrees...
I remember last year, while I was suffering like hell for a relationship, the ONLY (have tried many, many, many) "med" whcih worked was alcohol...But now I feel frustrated and really would like to stop without getting depressed or anxious...

Is acamprosate (Campral) available in Italy? It helps reduce alcohol cravings, but I do not know if it helps for sweets.
