Does Prozac (fluoxetine) increase suicide?
BMJ says maybe, and says studies may have been hidden:

I avoid any drug that is anti-sexual (any anti-sex effect is too close to death for me to ever consider taking such a medication anyway).

From what I understand, antidepressants can induce suicide, especially in the first few weeks of treatment. I think that the risk with Prozac is supposed to be a bit lower than with some of the other drugs.
But antidepressants are thought to prevent many more suicides than they cause. So all in all, they reduce the number of suicides.
Drug companies hide studies??? They wouldn't do that (lol).

Actually yes they would hide studies, and they have. It has recently been made aware that Lilly did infact not disclose information that lead to the conclusion that prozac and similar antidepressants can increase the risk of suicidal behavior.
Plus, contrary to popular belief, we have not seen a reduction in the suicide rate in the post antidepressant era. See for yourself. You won't find a study that shows that antidepressants do infact decrease suicide (in the long term)

I think BillLL was kidding when he said he didn't think they would hide reports (at least I hope he was).
I really don't know if antidepressants have any effect on the overall suicide rate (I would imagine that they make some people more prone to suicide and some people less prone to suicide), but I think the real issue here is that Lilly had a report that did find an increase risk and they chose to hide the report - that is not surprising and it is truly appaling behavior.
I hadn't seen any reports comparing suicide rates before and after the advent of widespread AD use, but I would not be surprised at all to find no change in the rate of suicide. Durring my high school years when I was on Prozac and later Zoloft, I thought nearly every day about blowing my brains out in the school cafeteria.
