(non-generic) PROZAC~Okay to open capsules?

Posted by memoryleaves on December 30, 2004, at 23:41:31

I have just been prescribed Prozac for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder @ 10mg only for the week before my period each month. I would like to know if it is okay for me to open up the capsules and take only 5mg to begin with to see how I react to it as I tend to be hypersensitive to medications.

Does the powder have to be in the capsule to be effective? Can I just swallow some with water or food?

Thanks in advance!

I took Prozac a few years ago and my doctor suggested doing just that: Open the capsule, pour it into a cup of water and drink half, then drink the other half the next day. Continue doing this until you feel ready to to take the full dosage.
Good luck with the prozac; it helped me almost immediately.

Usualy a non time activated med, like a slow release, med can be cut, divided. Normal prozac is fine.

That cup of water sounds like a good trick, will the medicine go bad in the water? Do you refrigerate it?

Normaly I just split the powder. I'll bet its easyer to measure in water!
