J&J Sumbits Drug
Dec. 29, 2004Johnson & Johnson said yesterday that it had applied for the first approval in the United States of a prescription treatment for premature ejaculation, the most common sexual dysfunction in men.
Johnson & Johnson, based in New Brunswick, N.J., acquired the drug, dapoxetine, in 2000 from PPD Inc.
The medication affects the same brain chemistry as some antidepressants, the company said.

Dapoxetine is an SSRI which was developed as an AD but didn't seem to work. Oh dear!
Dapoxetine has a rapid onset of action and a short half-life so it is suitable for 'as needed' use. It is taken an hout before sex.
It doesn't seem to be any more effective for PE than other SSRIs but it's selling point will probably be that it has a rapid-onset and short duration of action and so is more suitable for 'as needed' use than other SSRIs. Anyway, the other SSRIs aren't approved for PE, despite the fact that they are effective.

Dapoxetine data demonstrates that men taking dapoxetine hydrochloride for the treatment of premature ejaculation experienced significant improvements in sexual function, including ejaculatory control, satisfaction with sexual intercourse for men and their partners, and increases in intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT). These data were presented at the 100th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association.
If Viagra has made sex possible for men suffering from impotence, a new drug introduced in the United States aims to make it last longer. Much longer...
