General Rant, sleep problems

Posted by sdjeff on December 20, 2004, at 23:37:48

I have been suffering from non-restorative sleep for years. I get to sleep around 1 am, I wake up around 9 or 10 and can't even get out of bed until the afternoon. I am fatigued all day.

Plus I am depressed. I take 15 mg of Zyprexa and 60 mg of Cymbalta. I guess I'm wondering if the sleep problems are related to depression or a separate issue.

Oh man not getting resful sleep can have a lot to do with depression. Well feeling sluggish moreso I guess. You might have sleep apnea, a fancy word for snoring, and that really screws with your REM sleep. Being depressed also PHYSICALLY makes your brain less active and leaves your body feeling exhausted all the time. I would go get sleep therapy, it's not quack science, a lot of people say they get more restful sleep after getting themselves checked out by a doctor. Good luck.

I agree and before I went on the MAOIs, I saw a sleep doctor, who works at the same clinic my pdoc does, just to make sure I didn't have any underlying sleep issue. It turned out that I was not nearly sleepy enough to have apnea, but he could tell just by glancing at the back of my throat that I snored (which I already knew). I didn't have a sleep study, but they gave me a little oxygen sensor to take home one night to monitor my blood oxygen level while sleeping (It fit on my thumb or finger--I forget). I think mine was about 95%, which is good.

I use sleep/relaxation CDs as one of the means of coping with my very bad Parnate insomnia. Some of them claim to increase delta wave sleep, such as those by Dr. Jeffrey Thompson. I don't know if that's true, but they definitely help the quality of my sleep.

Sleep CDs ? for King Vultan » King Vultan

If you don't mind my asking, could you please tell me the name(s) of the CD(s) you use and where to get them? I have one sleep CD that I have been using since about May, but it doesn't help that much. My insomnia isn't too bad most nights, but sometimes it is difficult to not only fall asleep, but also to stay asleep. I just starting taking magnesium and taurine before bed, and it seems to help a bit, but perhaps adding a good quality sleep CD would be good as well.

Thanks.

Tamara

Sorry to interrupt, but I'd like to redirect follow-ups regarding sleep CDs to Psycho-Babble Psychology. Here's a link:
