My sister went on it for weight loss. Specifically, to counter the weight she gained on Haldol. I don't recall if it actually worked or not. The biggest side effect for her was getting pregnant ;) Oops!

But I'm assuming that isn't a huge concern for you. :D I will say it made her very spacey. She didn't stare off into space, but she seemed to lose a few IQ points, if you know what I mean.

Once she came off of it, everything returned to normal.

Hi Adam,

As little as 50mg topiramate a day may produce significant weight loss. If you haven't seen any benefit after taking 50mg/day for a few months you could increase the dose. Doses >100mg may be slightly more effective but side effects are common. Cognitive impairment can be a big problem for people on high doses of topiramate. If you do decide to increase the dose, it is best to do so very gradually. Rapid increases in dose tend to be poorly tolerated.

All the best,
Ed.

Hi Ed,

Thank you for the info. I will stick to 50mg once a day if I can handle SE.
Q : is weight loss due to loss of appetite or metabolism mechanism?

Thank you.

Adam.

Hi,

The weight loss is probably due to reduced appetite. If your appetite is unchanged after taking 50mg/day for a week or two you might want to consider a dose increase. If you can't tolerate 50mg/day you could always go back down to 25mg/day for a few weeks and then attempt to increase the dose if necessary.

The suggested starting dose for topiramate is 25mg/day!

Ed.

Have you ever tried zonisamide or orlistat for weight loss?

I have no Idea what zonisamide is,but I tried orlistat in the past and its SE was not acceptable.

Actually,I'm not fat at all,I just want to shed some 5-6 kilos and go back to my "ideal" shape by going into a diet and with a little help from the topamax I have...I gained 15+ kilos before on ADs and it took me time and a lot of effort to get off most of them....

That is why I now stick with benzos for relief of my anxiety/SA and completley avoid all ADs because of the weight problems that ADs cause...which is OK for me now because right now I do not suffer a Major Depression episode.

Regards,
Adam.

Hi!

Zonisamide (Zonegran) is an anti-convulsant which tends to cause weight loss.

DOes anyone know how these two compare RE weight loss?
It sounds like Zonegran has much less side effects, I predict I will beed to add something for weight control...

Thank you all,but I decided since I do not take now a medication that induces weight, and all I need is to reduce 5-6 kilos I will try it on my own...I do not think it is worth it going into Topamax side effects (especially dumbness!!)

(Iwill keep my Topamax box just in case!!)

Adam.
