Pdoc adding Gabapentin to the mix

Posted by celticmom on December 19, 2004, at 13:35:59

DH's pdoc said she would call in a script for Gabapentin to help with break through anxiety. Has anyone used this on top of another SSRI and how did it work for you?

I've used it in the past and occasionally since then when I start feeling a panicky phase coming on. It works good to quiet down the headnoise and ruminating thoughts, lets me relax and not be so hyperactive-good at reducing physical anxiety aspects. It seems to greatly reduce the "threatening" aspect of visual/audible stimulus. It can definitely make you pretty fuzzyheaded though. Tolerance often builds to it with chronic usage unfortunately (for many). It works best for me to just use it periodically for a week or so at a time.

Thanks Ritch. Did it make you thirsty? DH has been insanely thirsty since he started. But he may also be coming down with something, so I it is hard to tell if it is the medicine or the illness.

Also does the sleepiness go away over time? It has also been making him dead tired.

Yes, it does produce a little bit of cottonmouth to it and I have to drink extra water in the mornings when I'm taking at bedtime. However, it doesn't induce thirst as much as lithium did. The sleepiness does tend to back off some, but can be a problem. If you find it works well, you might get by with a lower dosage which should help that.
