Just in middle of a Panic Attack

Posted by mattsit on December 16, 2004, at 14:21:42

Im at work, and somone just called about a HUGE project I am working on telling me they need some equipment released for fabrication. I immediately am having a panic attack afraid I will release it wrong or something will go horribly wrong here...

I dont know why this happened. I have been on lexapro for 2.5 months now, and things were going great. I did binge drink VERY heavily over the weekend....Probably 30 drinks from friday night to Sunday night...I wonder if this is the cause of my increased anxiety and stress this week????

HELP ME!

I'm sure the drinking could be a factor in your panic. It's a depressant, which can cause anxiety, and it messes with your blood sugar and taxes your body, so it can't handle stress as well. Plus, I know if I drink I have increased anxiety with my hangover. Do you have any b vitamins handy? Drinking alcohol depletes them I believe and that might help some and also, drink water (help "clean" your system and will just help your body cope). I hope this helps.

Thanks MM.

I havent drank since Sunday night, but I still feel a little on edge...I also have been quite the insomniac despite taking a sleeping pill each night.

I dont know if the lexapro isnt cutting it after 10 weeks, or if it was my binge that ruined my progress, combined with the holidays and work stress picking up at the end of the year.

Why is life so difficult?

Has the Lexapro helped up until now? If it has, and the drinking was the only thing different (other than the holiday stress etc.) then it's a safe bet it's the cause, which would mean the Lexapro should still work, just not when you drink. If you're craving alcohol though, it might mean you need some kind of change. When I was on Serzone I craved alcohol like crazy (it can be a side effect of some medications for some people). It's probably hard to hear if you're having a panic attack right now, but breathe. Try to breathe deep down into your stomach/diaphragm. It helps me anyway.

I'm not certain what your panic attack symptoms are, but Lexapro is only going to lower your overall anxiety levels. If a situation is unusually stressful, and your anxiety levels rise to the point of triggering panic attack symptoms such as shortness of breath, pounding heart, sweating, etc., I do not believe the Lexapro has the ability to do much good at that point. For those kinds of symptoms, you really need a drug that works strongly on norepinephrine, such as some of the tricyclics or an MAOI.

Gotcha...thanks Guys. I think Im really feeling the pinch at work and that's causing my issues at the moment. Im in the mechanical contstruction field and Im always worried im going to do something wrong and cost the company lots of money and ultimately cost myself my job....and then i start worrying that I'll never find another job, and that my wife and I will be homeless and stuff like that. Plus we're looking for a house in an area where there arent many to choose from, she wants to have a baby, Im not ready...the holidays are coming....I think im just going into overload. Thanks for the words though...I appreciate them.

Hey there,
Sounds like the panic is situationally induced...from feeling overloaded. For future reference, see if your PDOC will conisdere prescribing a fast acting benzo (like xanax) for panic attacks. Especially if they are disrupting your work life. For now, if you can talk a brisk walk around your office (or building) and try to do deep breathting (Like the other poster said) that may help.

Good luck! (i have those same fears about being homeless, etc. so you are not alone!)

Thanks buddy,

Its just I dont understand why I react this way. Other people get the same calls and just execute...I panic and worry and think I've screwed it up, but the next day realize I am fine....weird.
