Viloxazine or Vivarint SAFE with paxil?? NRI

Posted by adam canada on November 30, 2004, at 16:46:02

Hi. I am having some trouble with lack of energy. Tiredness and lack of sex drive. Paxil has helped much with anxiety and depression so I cannot be taken off it.

Last time I was on vivarint on its own I had super sex drive. I wanted it all the time any time. so i guess that's good. and I had energy. But it didnt do anything for depression much it seemed.

Anyway... Can it be combined with PAXIL? an SSRI? Vivarint is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor I believe. NRI.

Are they safe to try together? PLease let me know. this is very important.

1. I would guess (and you should consult and MD and/or do your own research) this is relatively safe, using the following reasoning, based on the following:

- The primary contraindications for SSRIs are other serotonergic drugs like other SSRIs (prozac, etc.), TCAs, or MAOIs. The main fear is something nasty called serotonin syndrome.

- A web search shows some thinking that Viloxazine affects serotonin, but it is primarily a NE drug, so it may not be a significant risk.

- The physicians info available on the web do list only MAOIs, not SSRIs, as contraindicated antidepressants. [Not surprising, since MAOI interactions can be so serious; however, I have found personally and read many other patient accounts that some supposedly contraindicated drugs can be used with MAOIs, like wellbutrin, so I suspect the MAOI warning is included as standard legal boilerplate. Still, not something to mess around with.] http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100002787.html

2. Still, you might want to start with wellbutrin. Wellbutrin is known have a pro-sexual effect, and there have been several studies that looked specifically at the safety and efficacy of adding wellbutrin to SSRIs like paxil to counteract loss of libido. Last time I looked (a few years ago), the outcomes were good. I personally found that "regular" wellbutrin (non SR or XL formulations) seemed to have more effect on libido, but you have to take it multiple times a day which can be a pain. But its available as generic so might be a good option.

3. Are you sure viloxazine is still available? I used it while in France ~5 years ago and loved it (no side effects, good AD effect, although at higher doses). But after returning to US and trying to import, I found that it had been discontinued in UK, italy, and maybe france. The international pharamcies couldn't find any more supply. If you know it's available, mind tell me what country you get it from? [I know Dr. Bob doesn't want us mentioning specific suppliers, but I'm just curious if its available in general].

Good luck!

Hi,

Viloxazine was discontinued in the UK years ago. Don't know about anywhere else!
