Effexor is (R/S)-1-[2-(dimethylamino)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethyl] cyclohexanol hydrochloride.
Topamax is 2,3:4,5-Di-O-isopropylidene-ß-D-fructopyranose sulfamate.
I know those don't mean anything to you, but Effexor is a bicyclic compound, and Topomax is a monocyclic compound derived from fruit sugar, fructose. Their structures are quite different.
The side-effects etc. similarities are purely coincidental.
