The few days of mood-swings, nausea, and crying spells were just too much (I was even tempted to up my zoloft to 150mg, thinking that feeling nothing was better than feeling the way I was)-- I only took 40mg of strattera yesterday, I didn't take it at all today...I woke-up today (first day back at school since the holiday) still feeling kind of down, but as the day went on, I felt better. I was starting to feel the benefits of the strattera (i.e. motivation), at the same time I started feeling the negative things, and right after I increased to 80mg...that CAN'T just be a coincidence, right?
I am seeing my pdoc tomorrow, and I think, or kind of hoping/kind of scared (lol mixed feelings I guess), that she is going to give me a stimulant....
Any thoughts, experiences, etc. are GREATLY appreciated.

Hi,
Perhaps the problems you experienced were due to the atomoxetine acting as a partial kappa agonist.....
'The major human metabolite of atomoxetine (4-hydroxyatomoxetine) was tested against a panel of receptors and enzymes, and was found to interact with the mu, delta, and kappa-opioid receptors based upon studies involving both binding and functional assays. 4-hydroxyatomoxetine was determined to be a partial agonist of the kappa-opioid receptor.'
Kappa agonists are known to cause mental distress/dysphoria. Kappa opioid agonists have been used as analgesics but 'their development was eventually discontinued due to central side effects such as sedation and dysphoria.'Have you ever tried desipramine? Perhaps it would be better than atomoxetine if your pdoc won't prescribe a stimulant. With desipramine it's useful to start with a low dose and increase gradually to minimise side effects.

I have not tried desipramine, I actually don't know anything about it. I guess my main concern about stimulants is that they'll stop working at some point, or I'll get depressed on them for some reason.
As always, Ed, a great source of information...Thanx!

Hi,
On the other hand, if your negative reaction to atomoxetine was due to its activity as a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor then you might not like desipramine any better!

Ed.
