Were You Ever On These Old Meds?

Posted by cubbybear on November 28, 2004, at 4:45:47

As a related issue to my earlier thread about experiencing depression back in the 80s (before the SSRIs), I was wondering if anyone was given any of the following meds, and how you reacted to them:

1) Mellaril

2) Triavil

3) Combination of Amitriptyline and Halcion (or other benzo) and had nightmarish anti-cholinergic reaction.

Just curious.

Hi,

Thioridazine (Mellaril/Melleril) used to be one of the most popular antipsychotics in the UK. I've never taken it myself but I have known several people who have taken it.

A friend of the family who had a stroke was given thioridazine to relieve severe agitation. She took 10mg three times a day. It was apparantly quite effective in reducing distress. Because of the risk of arrhythmias, a lot of the people (in the UK) who used to take thioridazine have now been switched to chlorpromazine or an atypical AP.

I was never diagnosed as psychotic but my pdoc wanted to give the Mellaril a try back in 1984 to see if it would relieve my depression/anxiety. I tried it once and really didn't like the odd, spaced-out feeling it gave me. Last year, I was stunned to learn that in the U.S.A. it now carries a black-box warning.

Hi,

In England, thioridazine use has plummeted in recent years after the goverment stated that it should only be used by consultant psychiatrists as a second-line treatment for schizophrenia. This was because of the risk of arrhythmias. Anyway, I recently saw a report that claimed the risk of arrhythmias with thioridazine was no higher than with haloperidol!

I took for a year one med that contains

Perfenazine ( old ap )
Diazepam
Amitryptiline

it´s not common , it´s kind of old . I stop the med when my muscles started to move on their own.
Not like Tardive diskinesia , but I did not like that reaction

This is the end of the thread.
