Blood Pressure

Posted by Sinnielou on November 26, 2004, at 10:22:29

Hey Everyone,
I haven't posted in a really really long time. I'm doing excellent still on 225mg of effexor for over a year and 30 mg of remeron everything seems to be going well. I was at the doctors though and I have high blood pressure this is the second time that my blood pressure is up, but the first time it was just after I had surgery so I was told to go back and do a follow up. I'm just curious to know if anyone has had high blood pressure while on Effexor because my doctor told me it wasn't med related and also I know with blood pressue diet has alot to do with it and since I've packed on a few pounds because of the meds how am I suppose to take off the pounds I packed on??
Thanks Shannon

Your doctor is absolutely wrong about it not being med related. The effexor website itself mentiones that high blood pressure is noted with the high doses. That combined with remeron it is not unlikely that it is med related.

Anyhow, don't panic. The best thing to do is to take a small dose of a blood pressure medicine.
At least until it is safe (depression wise) to reduce your AD medication.

Effexor is known to increase blood pressure, particularly at 225 mg/day and above; although, my GP says he has also seen an effect in some people at lower dosages. Of course, the extra weight could also have something to do with it, but whatever the case, I would suggest considering some kind of BP med, depending on exactly how high it is. There are a kazillion different BP meds divided among four major classes; you should be able to find one (combinations are also frequently used) that works well for you.
