A month ago my pdoc prescribed thyroxine (alongside my Effexor) for resistant depression. I went to my GP a few days ago for something completely unrelated, and he said that he was worried I was going to ask for a repeat prescription for thyroxine, because in his opinion it is too risky (due to it increasing the likelihood of heart problems in later life). I'm not so much bothered that my pdoc prescribed this med, but that he didn't inform me of the risks or ask about my family history of cardiac problems. I had an appointment with him today, where he just laughed off the risks as if they were trivil - but why did the GP have so much concern?
There is hardly any research on thyroxine in treatment of depression, or on its effects on the heart. Does anyone here have any info? I'd be really grateful as I don't know what move to make from here.

I'm on your pdoc's side on this issue. I have never heard of thyroxine causing heart problems and I have done a lot of reading over the years. Maybe it's a theoretical possibility, but I would not worry about it if I were you.
Adding too much thyroxine for long periods of time can possibly contribute to osteoporosis in females after menopause.
Right now your problem is depression. Follow your pdoc's advise and don't worry about the other stuff since they are not likely risks.

Thyroid can cause heart problems if the dose is too high-your doctor should definitely be monitoring your blood levels on a regular basis. (Though if you`re not feeling side effects like insomnia, anxiety, palpitations, hot flashes etc you`re probably not getting too much). Cecilia

>Hi,
I take 300mcg of Thyroxine per day, it's fairly benign, but you need blood tests & an endocrinologist to determine what you need, not a Pdoc or GP.
Cheers,
Paul.
