Has anyone gone to Dr Liebowitz in NY. I live in NY and wanted to know if it is worth it to see him. He is very expensive. I am trying to find a Antidepressant that works like Nardil but is not nardil. I have tried Nardil but got such bad edema and Nausea that I had to stop it. I am on Zoloft and Lamicatal. The Lamictal helps some with energy and mood and concentration but makes me anxious. I also noticed and I dont know if anyone else has experienced this but I got discoloration on my face from the Zoloft and noticed hair thinning.
If anyone can shed some experience on things that have helped them that would be great. My current doctor talked to me about DHEA and Trileptal. I just dont think all of these things really hit the A Typical depression problem. Your imput is appreciated!

Can someone please explain what the heck "atypical depression" is? Or "anheodinia"? (as if depressed people typically experience PLEASURE, or something? isn't that redundant to specify??)

Atypical depression is characterized by symptoms such as sleeping and eating too much, mood reactivity, and rejection hypersensitivity, if I remember correctly. Traditionally, MAOIs, particularly Nardil, were superior to tricyclics in treating this, but perhaps the SSRIs show some efficacy, as well.
Anhedonia is defined as the lack of ability to experience pleasure. It may be a symptom of depression but is not the same exact thing. In my case, it seems that depression is actually secondary to anhedonia, as my anhedonia seems far more treatment resistant than my depression. Most of the drugs I've tried have brightened my mood, but very few actually addressed my anhedonia issue. Anhedonia seems to have a strong dopaminergic component.

An antidepressant that works like Nardil but isn't Nardil would be Parnate. You could also try emailing Dr. Liebowitz and see if he can provide any help. I emailed with a question about some advice on his website and he promptly replied.

Dear Jlkny,
Hey fellow New Yorker (watching the Yankees?). Dr. Liebowitz is probably the one of the top psychiatists, if not the top, in the United States for social anxiety. He started an entire clinic devoted to anxiety. I have not been able to afford seeing him ... although I have seen Dr Glassman and Dr Quitken for consults. All agree that Nardil and Klonopin are the best. The second tier meds are neurontin, zoloft/paxil, effexor and maybe seligiline/stimulants/provigil. I have been experimenting with combos recently since nardil causes me tremedous weight gain, insomnia and sexual dysfunction. Right now I would say zoloft-lithium augmentation-klonopin-wellbutrin come pretty close to nardil.

Try to get in touch with JonW who sees Dr L.
Hope your better soon!

I know Dr.Michael Liebowitz. He was my psychiatric resident 30 years ago when I was a patient at the New York State Psychiatric Institute (Columbia University) in NYC. I might warn you to be very cautious about him. He was crude and agressive. In fact he was the worst psychiatrist I've ever had. I know he has become famous. He's very bright, but a total loser, if you ask me.

> mmerrynickWow you were his patient? So I take it you would not recommend him. Did he get you on Meds that worked for you? That for me is the most important I know alot of these doctors have bad personalities.
Thanks
