Trileptol for anxiety?

Posted by jonh kimble on October 21, 2004, at 16:33:15

I have some kind of anxiety where I perceive everything as turning out bad, low motivation, semi depressed, cant concentrate, and before all this is social anxiety of sorts. (really hard time staying in a conversation.) My new pdoc prescribes 1mg ativan bid(which isnt working, see above) and trileptol 150 mg bid. He believes I have an over active limbic and possibly temporal lobe disfunctions (would that include amygdala?)Ive failed almost every other kind of treatment, and it makes sense to me to use something that slows down neural connections, as they are what have helped me in the past, like benzos and alcohol. Just that these two cant really be relied on for life. Arguably benzos have there place tho... Anyway, what do you think of this? Thanks Tom

Unfortunately, Trileptal hasn't yet been studied for the treatment of anxiety or depression. Other anticonvulsants may be more helpful eg. Lamotrigine(Lamictal) can relieve depression and Pregabalin(Lyrica) may relieve anxiety. There is also some evidence that Gabapentin(Neurontin) may help anxiety. Neurontin is also an anti-seizure drug.
Hope this helps..

I think it would be worth trying. Neurontin or pregabalin might be better though. I'm bipolar with very bad anxiety of all sorts (episodically) and when I increased my Depakote recently to settle down some dysphoric hypomania and rapid cycling most of the anxiety (primarily panic, social anx/GAD) settled down markedly with the dose increase.
