HELP PLEASE! SHELF LIFE OF XANAX

Posted by lepus on October 20, 2004, at 16:52:58

My therapist told me to try to take some Xanax if I had any around because I am having massive anxiety that I can't relieve with any other methods.

I have a bottle of Xanax from a prescription from late last year. It was filled on 12/24/03. Is it still safe to take or do I have to try to get someone to prescribe me a new bottle?

Please help.

The expiration date should be right on the bottle. Generally, I've found the expiration date for meds like xanax is at least a year from the prescription date, so you should be fine. If you have doubts, call the pharmacist where you had the prescription filled.

Very few medications lose their potency over time. They have expirations dates on them, but the dates are for the most part bogus. The exceptions are meds with live bacteria, those that need refrigeration and those that have been exposed to strong light, heat, water or other situation that could activate them chemically or otherwise damage them. Under ordinary storage conditions, the majority of meds remain good for decades, if not millennia.

Thank you for your replies. For some reason this bottle doesn't have an expiration date on it. The only date I can find is the date I can no longer get any refills after.

It turns out that I managed to get myself calmed down using other methods so I didn't have to take one.

Thank you for the information however. It is good to know.
