Trileptal Anyone?

Posted by AnxiousAndy on September 20, 2004, at 13:51:32

Hi all:

Was just wondering if anyone takes trileptal? My diagnosis is Depression with Anxiety disorder, but more anxiety than anything. I told my dr. I don't want to take any SSRI's this time, and he gave me this (along with wellbutrin which I am undecided about.)

Just wondering if anyone is on it, how much they are taking, and if it's helping. I know that's no guarantee for me, but I'd just like to hear what people have to say. Thanks in advance for any insight.

wellbutrin alone may cause irritability and therefore some anxiety.

i was on both at the same time, and I am currently still on trileptal.

i think the wellbutrin will counteract the sedating and cognitive dulling effect from the trileptal to an extent that may be appreciated or not.

it has a great side effect profile. the side effects are pretty much common for everyone. i have written about the many times on this site. they tend to go away in a few days, but whenever you escalate the dose you will experience them.

i tend to think it probably becomes "stale" after a while, so be receptive to dosage increases or maybe moving to lamictal which is similar in its therapuetic effect. i have never had it though.

Thanks for the info. I'm on day two of taking both, and like most all the other ad's I've taken, Wellbutrin IS causing the agitation, which is the part I can't stand about ad's. the first time I took these (yesterday), I felt better in about an hour - better than I had felt in months. I knew an SSRI doesn't act like that, so I figured it must be the Trileptal...

I don't know about Wellbutrin or the SSRIs for me - they all seem to make me agitated and increase my anxiety.

Thanks for the info!

Andy,
Trileptal is either hit or miss, I love it personally... I am have mild BP II issue and use trileptal to control it. As far as SSRIs are concerned... I can't emphasize enough just how important they are for you in anxiety treatments over the long haul.... the problem is that they can literally take MONTHS to get used to with an increase in anxiety, restlessness, and agitation, after that though, they really are good medications, it's just that intial soemtimes up to 3 month period of getting used to them. Could you keep that trileptal in there and add an SSRI perhaps?

Thanks for the info. I'm a week and a day now on wellbutrin (150) and trileptal (300x2). The side effects are getting slowly better, but still lots of agitation, probably on the wellbutrin. I know I have to hold out on the wellbutrin and that's what I intend to do now, give it a chance to work. If I can get to feeling half decent, I think my dr. wants to increase the trileptal. I guess we'll see what happens. I took an ativan the other night (0.5) and felt like I was stoned. Ativan never did that to me. But, it took away ALL the agitation, so at least I have that option if it gets too much for me. Thanks again for the post.

Hi andy,
You're defientely right, Wellbutrin can cause agitation, whcih eventually subsides... I still can't get this nagging thought out of my midn that you should add jsut a small dose of an SSRI in to help with your anxiety once you're used to the other meds... it takes motnhs for them to work, but in the long haul you'll be happy witht he results... also, trileptal is great for keeping things on an even keel.

trileptal has helped me greatly with my anxiety disorder the higher the dose, the less anxiety and irritability i get.

How high of a dose are you on, and how long have you been on trileptal? Have you experienced much exhaustion on this, or has it gotten better the longer you were on this? One more question =), do you find that it helps with your depression?

I have been on this now for about a month and am currently at 600mg. Sometimes it helps other times I am just tired and feel awful, any input would be much appreciated!

I have been on it for over a month now, and my pdoc wanted me to up the dose to 450x2 a day. I absolutely cannot tolerate this drug. I am so dizzy and miserable - i'm glad to hear it worked for you, but I can definately say it's doing nothing for my anxiety...
