Wellbutrin: 1st Week Questions

Posted by daniel2000 on September 15, 2004, at 17:12:57

I am 21 years old. My doctor just started me on Wellbutrin SR 150 mg for a depression/dysthymia/ADD kind of thing. My problem is very much enery-depletion related and somehow intermixed with possible physical presence of chronic epstein barr virus, which only complicates matters that much worse in a diagnosis. Anyways, now that you know some important background information, the doctor said it is not seem to be the exact form-fit of ADD and seemed to be more depression oriented and said wellbutrin will help with energy, focus and get me back in my life again. I knew a lot about the medicine before that after taking a psycho-pharmaceutical course last semester in college. But yesterday, the 3rd day of taking the 1x a day 150 mg dose I had rapid heart beat and when I was in a store I suffered a severe kind of brain fog, got real disoriented and mad at the smallest things; I almost felt out of my mind, but then after 30 minutes it went away. I am afraid that this will get worse with time and therefore didn't take it today, but I feel it might go away seeing that this is the very first anti-depressant I have ever taken. Does anyone have any information regarding side effects and how long it takes for wellbutrin (generic form:budeprion) to stabilize in a new user?

I think it's going to get beter with time. I'm currently fooling around with the immediate release and the SR. I have the fog when I first take too much IR. My biggest problem is shaky hands. I think the majority of your side effects will ease

Hi:
I didn't have an experience all of the side-effects about which you're describing when I started WB. However, as to 'rapid heart rate/racing' I had when I was somewhere around 300 mg. or more. Then, I can not be sure to say whether those side-effects would dissipate with time. Probably, it will, ... however since you have physical problem mentioned above, " chronic epstein barr virus," has something to do with some of side-effects experienced in the store. I guess that your pdoc. already knew your physical problem when he/she rxed WB. Because, WB is a sort 'stimulant,' not like regular stimulants, such as Ritalin and Adderall. However, there is still some/milder form of 'stimulant' effect/property that in turn works particularly on ADD and similar problem along with 'milder' form of anti-depressant efficacy. However, WB is NOT like 'regular anti-depressants, such as Prozac, Effexor, Lexapro, Celexa and more lists go on. It's a sort an 'add-on' anti-depressant.

In my opinion, if those annoyance/side-effects bothers you, then you could stop WB. However, if WB offers you 'initial' relief, such as lifting your energy-level and concentration, then it might not be easy for you to discontinue because of a benefit from WB. Just on 3rd day, it's REALLY hard to say which way you should go, take or not-take. Probably, you need to talk to your pdoc. before making any decision. Because, WB is one of few AD med. which alleviates the area of concentration and energy. Or, you may need another AD to counteract WB's negative effect. Most likely, you might need some 'sedative' med., such as Klonopin and the like to even things out.
H.G.

It's a great drug. After the first few weeks the side effects will pass.

It's helped me with a few things. My room is always clean, and my laundry is taken care of in a timely fashion. I usually didn't have the motivation to keep on top of these things before. It's helped me with respect to a lot of other things as well. It gives a little more zest for life!

But as always your mileage may vary.
