Howdy,
I have been getting increased edema recently and it's not resolving with usual stuff...elevating legs, avoiding caffeine and salt, etc. My urinary retention is a bit worse, but not impossible. But I feel like a puffer fish.My meds and supps:
Nardil 67.5 mg spread out over 4 doses
Gabitril 4 mg at night
Synthroid 50 mcg
Claritin 10 mg
B comp supplement
Calcium carbonate 200 mg in two doses
Magnesium oxide 500 mg in two doses
Pre-natal vitamin with Iron and Folic AcidI've had edema with Nardil before, but only when also taking an NSAID. What might be causing it now? And what can I do about it?

I've heard that a diuretic is used sometimes, but can be tricky because of increased hypotension.
I had never heard of any of your solutions to MAOI edema! Do you have any other solutions? Salt I knew about, but not caffeine. I'll have to cut back. I'm worried that Parnate will have this side effect for me. Nardil certainly did, even at lower doses.

Thanks for your thoughts. I really don't have any effective remedies, which is why I posted. I know too much salt can lead to retaining fluids. My thought on caffeine is that it can dehydrate you, but if you are already fluid overloaded, I don't know if that still happens. I just figured plain water might be best right now.
I quit the Gabitril two days ago, and went back to 60 mg of Nardil and the edema is resolving slowly. Gaining 10 pounds of fluid in one week is scary! So far about 4 pounds have come off in two days. Today feels like it's continuing.
I saw my pdoc who agreed that the Nardil seemed to be responsible, but wondered if the Gabitril was working synergistically with it to make it so much worse than usual. She also recommended that I get a cardiac work up just to be sure, though in case it's unrelated.
I never did take a diuretic, as I didn't want to mess up my BP or electrolytes. Well, I did take a couple doses of Pamprin, which has a mild OTC diuretic in it. But it didn't do anything.
Good luck on the Parnate. My med reference does not list edema as a S/E of Parnate, so hopefully you will not have trouble with this.

Actually, probably much quicker than via the normal route.

I don't mind my serious subject going awry. It was a good laugh. Thanks for answering my questions seriously, although I meant them in jest.
Actually, going back to 60 mg of Nardil and losing the Gabitril have resulted in the fluid coming off. How often do you gain and lose 10 pounds in one seven day period? Sheesh. It seems to be dose dependent on the Nardil, but I still wonder if somehow the Gabitril had some facilitative or synergistic role. But the Gab. wasn't really doing anything for me except give me heartburn, so no great loss.
My pdoc did recommend that I get a cardiac workup just to be safe. I'm okay with that, and I assume my GP will be, too. But I think it's the Nardil. I seem to have pretty tight tolerances to medications and blood chemistry, so it makes sense to me that I couldn't tolerate even a tiny dose increase. Going from 60 straight to 75 about drove me out of my skin with agitation, so...

My cat had an enema today, but not Nardil. Just warm water and KY jelly. Maybe he can stand in for me? ;-)
