Namenda with BPII and Abilify anyone?

Posted by upsndowns on August 23, 2004, at 16:39:11

My pdoc gave me samples of Namenda today as I have discontinued, finally, the smidge of serzone that was the AD part of my cocktail and the downswing has begun. Anyone have any suggestions, anecdotal info or advice about this drug or this combination...it would be greatly appreciated. I am especially susceptible to side effects, so any reports about them also desired, especially before I get too involved with this new drug.

I am currently taking Namenda (memantine) 20mg with my other medication, including Abilify. I experienced a partial antidepressant response to it during the second and third weeks. Nothing since. No side effects. The only negative thing I experienced was a stupor that appeared when I tried increasing the dosage to 40mg.

It is too early to tell what place Namenda will have in treating bipolar disorder or depression. I will continue to take it in the hopes that it will act to augment future treatments. I recently added Cymbalta (duloxetine), an Effexor-type antidepressant drug.

Good luck with it. I think it's worth a try.

Thanks for the response. Since it took me so long to get off Serzone and since I am exquisitely sensitive to the tiniest dose of any and all medications, I was a bit wary about trying yet another off-label med. I currently take 5mg of Abilify and this has been the most effective drug I have taken in several years and at this very low dose; I almost didn't get off the 2.5mg dose. I am hoping I will respond to the introductory dose of Namenda rather quickly and that I will see a good result.

Abilify did nothing for me for depression. Pretzels and mustard worked far better,

Damn. I've been wasting my time with pretzel monotherapy. My doctor never suggested using mustard as an augmentor.

Abilify does have antidepressant properties. This has been reported by many people here and has also been my own experience with this drug. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be very robust on a long-term basis.

Hi Scott:
>>> Damn. I've been wasting my time with pretzel monotherapy. My doctor never suggested using mustard as an augmentor. <<<<

--- I'm very glad to read the above, because it made me 'a good laugh.' You have a terrific sense of humor despite of your problem, depression. Sounds like your depression started to lift due to the new A.D., Cymbalist(sp?). It's VERY GOOD that your new one working VERY WELL on you!
