paxil changed my life at age 16

Posted by dondon on August 21, 2004, at 19:02:08

Has anyone else been saved by paxil? I have had severe anxiety since age 14. I got put on paxil when i was 16 and boy did it chagne my life. I made dozens of friends that year when I was 16 but i stopped paxil when i was 17 and then i was depressed again and shy again(social phobia)I now find that I need ssri's to ahve a normal life. How old were you when you started paxil? And did it change your personality?

I started paxil at 16 to mainly because I was depressed..but it helped with social phobia alot to...I really have mixed feelings about it...Yes it did make me more outgoing..and accepted as I wasn't as shy and sheltered as I once ones..but it only seemed to be effective for the short term..I started having a lot of problems when I was on it for a year or so...Why did you stop it in the first place>?

I took paxil in my mid twentys, for social phobia. And it did help me make friends at work etc. but it changed my personality so much that my loved ones, didnt know who i was anymore..! And with the new info about teens on paxil, I'd be scared to put my daughter 15 on it if she were depressed because of the suicidal issues. But, I just wanted to say, that without CBT along with paxil, it wont work to actually change your personality. Once i stopped taking it (bad side effects) I went right back to being a hermit. I tried paxil again, recently and it didnt have that effect on me. My pdoc said sometimes if you have taken a drug before, it doesnt work the same again...

Hi,

I first started taking Seroxat when I was about 27 or 28, and whilst it did make me feel more outgoing and quite elated at first it didn't really change my life as I'd already been on a tricyclic for about 5 years before that and that had changed my life when I started taking that in that I felt completely free of depression and anxiety.

I'm now back on it (now 38) twice the dose and it it doestn't work anywhere near as well for some reason which I really would like to know.

Hi Denise.

Sometimes, the brain is *too* plastic. It can adapt in undesirable ways. A single exposure to these powerful drugs can elicit a compensatory responses by the brain that involve things like adjustments of receptor sensitivity on the outside of neurons, sensitivity of second messenger systems inside the neuron, and changes in gene expression within the nucleus. Remember, a single exposure to an psychological trauma can produce persistent undesirable changes in brain function - PTSD.

The good news is that it is the plasticity of the brain that will allow you to get well one day soon.
