HELP-ONCE AGAIN...

Posted by woolav on August 19, 2004, at 17:33:19

Has anyone ever heard of taking adderal with prozac- ? I am confused that ppl with ADHD would take a drug w/ amphetamine's. And I am wondering if adding that would make me a little more alert. I always have to have coffee all day or i am totally tired and dont even want to talk....Or, should i add wellbutrin to the prozac??? I read these posts and get more confused...

hello there, chemist here...yes, i have heard of people taking amphetamine for ADHD, and also have heard of people taking prozac and adderall. in people with ADD/ADHD, studies have shown (to borrow a phrase) that, in what is known as a ``paradoxical reaction,'' the addition of a stimulant actually makes these folks calm and more focused. if a ``normal'' person ingests ritalin, focalin (one of the enantiomers of the drug in ritalin), amphetamine (adderall or dexedrine, usually), or some other stimulants such as provigil or strattera, they get very ``speedy,'' unfocused, and shaky, to name a few effects. one of my diagnoses is ADD - although i, my prescribing doctor, and my therapist question it - and one of the medications i take is dexedrine. aside from wordy posts on PB, it appears to calm me down or, at least, focus my spastic energies in a creative way (usually): no grinding of teeth or 25-mile running binges, no trouble with 6-8 hours of sleep (although aided by xanax). as for wellbutrin, i have no personal experience, although i have read on this board mixed reviews, and i do recall that overall, it is rather activating. so yes, not uncommon and, some would say that children especially are being overprescribed (ritalin, in particular), although i won't go down that road other than to bring it to your attention that all ages and sexes are targeted. all the best, chemist

hi, sandy!

i have changed my mind once again and decided to stay on the prozac. i am going to supplement with ritalin, a small dose, e.g. 2.5-5 mg/day initially, because there could be increased blood levels due to the combo. this should a great combo, because not only will it boost our beloved dopamine but it will also help combat the SSRI-induced lethargy. i *can't wait* to get some dopamine in my system! especially since i'm experiencing akathesia (sp?). i'm having a really hard time being still; it's an unpleasant feeling. after researching wellbutrin, it doesn't sound that great to me, but if you aren't having anxiety issues you could try it. hope this clears all this up for you a bit!

bon chance,
amy :)

also, if you decide to try wellbutrin with the prozac, you might want to reduce your dosage/s due to the interaction between the two raising blood levels of dopamine and serotonin.

Hey Amy, I am glad to hear you are trying the Ritalin, everytime I have mentioned the tiredness or fatigue from my meds to my pdoc , she just says it should pass.
I do have anxiety issues. panic disorder actually, so i take xanax daily and i think that adding a stimulating drug would counter-act the xanax for me.
But i truely hope it works for you!!
Good Luck and let me know how it goes...
Sandy

hello there, chemist here...i wanted to comment on your hesitance for adding a stimulant to your xanax...of course, we all react in different ways, but your situation is quite similar to mine: i take xanax and a very potent stimulant (dexedrine) and have had extensive and severe panic attacks in the past, and cannot recall the last time i even came close. the dexedrine keeps my (often meandering) mind on-track, and the xanax works its magic in the anxiety/panic department.....just a f.y.i., as you might find that your experience is similar to mine should you go that route in the future....all the best, chemist

yeah, i'm not really sure i want to go the amphetamine route, either. (i'm still figuring this out myself!) provigil would probably be a better option than ritalin (the source on the internet i read said to use ritalin, but i don't see why provigil wouldn't work just as well or better). but provigil is still a stimulant (although not an amphetamine, i don't think), and i'm not sure whether stimulants are neurotoxic or not. (i'm just full of questions, here, as a newbie to pharmacology. may have to start a thread on that.) so i am really leaning towards mirapex. it sounds great, although it may cause nausea. this goes away after adjusting to the medication for some.

still doing my research :)....i came across this info concerning provigil:

"provigil does not act as a stimulant, and so does not produce side effects like anxiety and irritability."

so even if stimulants were neurotoxic (which i have no idea if they are or not), provigil is different from other stimulants, so it would potentially still be safe....just thought i'd share. :)

hello,
i'm not trying to be annoying here, but i just wanted to state to anyone following my posts here, that after reading the responses to another post on this board, i believe stimulants to be safe. and i aim to try provigil.
