My shrink is considering pushing me into hyperthyroidism. Has anyone else tried this?
I am hypothyroid right now and BPII. I am on Topomax and Lamictal. He has heard this has worked for some....my main problem is rapid cycling from manageable highs to major depressions.
Any thoughts?

It depends what he means by "forcing into hyper".
If he means only reducing your TSH to below 0.5(or 0.3)..but keeping your ft4, ft3 still in the normal range,(and you not being symptomatically hyper) then yes...otherwise no I haven't heard of it and would be worried. I'd like to know what he meant first and how he was planning to do it also.

Supratherapeutic (hyperthyroid) dosages of T4 (thyroxine) have been used to treat rapid-cycling bipolar disorder for quite a few years. It is not very common, though. Generally, the treatment depends upon the simultaneous use of an antidepressant or a mood stabilizer. If it works, you will want to research what effects the treatment will have on your body long term and how to compensate for them. Osteoporosis is usually a concern.

Thanks Scott, I can see now how it could work with the combo.
I hadn't heard of it used in that way before

Thanks Scott, Yep, hypermetabolic doses of thyroid can cause osteo and raise BP and racing heart.....all things my doc mentioned...
I did find mention of it at Dr.Peter Brigham site and Dr. Ivan Goldberg's site as well...I was just hoping maybe someone here had maybe tried it.....
we will be working closely with my MD....we are grasping at straws here...I am rapid cycling big time and willing to try anything at this stage. It is one of the treatments that is mentioned quite frequently as a treatment for female BPII rapid cyclers...

just my 2 cents: have you read the research done by Dr Peter Whybrow at UCLA: his focus is mood disorders and thyroid, especially manic or rapid cycling....I think your doc may be on to something. IMHO he is "up" on the latest info.
