Want to get off Seroquel!!

Posted by jerrympls on July 14, 2004, at 19:07:45

Currently I take 200mg Seroquel, 20mg Ambien (prn) and 20mg Valium for insomnia (yeah, I'm a tough insomniac). I have a new doc (a resident..ugh) and I want to go OFF the Seroquel and perhaps the Ambien and instead take Halcion. However, he's said "You're already taking a benzo (valium) so I'm not comfortable with that..." But my PREVIOUS doc had me on Klonopin, Ambien, Seroquel AND Restoril at one time for insomnia! AND it's in my chart!

So - what can I do/say to this new "young" doc to get him to wake up!?

Thanks!!

Jerry

Could just keep doing the ol' "it's not working routine" it takes time, but eventually you get what you want.

Can I ask why you want to get off the Seroquel? I too was put on Seroquel for insomnia in the past. It knocked me out like nothing else I had ever tried before, inc. Valium, Ambien, Xanax, Serax, Trazodone, muscle relaxants, etc...
Was the S not working for your insomnia?
Personally, I let the trial boxes i was given of it run out because i couldn't deal with some of the side effects from it.
You might want to get a second opinion.
Best,
L.

HI Laree!

Well, I want to get off of the Seroquel because it's TOO sedating - even at lower dosages. I'm late to work more often than not because of the heavy Seroquel hangover - EVEN if I take it 8-10 hours before I have to get up. It's a love/hate relationship because it knocks me out wonderfully (if one can be knocked out wonderfully?) but its hangover is too much.

PLUS it has caused A LOT of weight gain.

Jerry :-)

I found the Seroquel too sedating as well. I would have terrible hangovers the day after taking any, so I hear you there!!
I also thought it might be putting some weight on me...but I normally only took it on an 'as needed' basis. It's a very 'heavy' sort of drug in many ways...lol

jerry and friends,

i sympathize ... i had been diagnosed bipolar in 2000 and have since been on a regimen that includes neurontin and seroquel.

i, too, have developed sleep problems with these meds and struggle to find a solution.

initially, on seroquel i was sleeping too much, but with little hangover. and gained a lot of weight ... 80lbs.

currently, i am switching from seroquel to geodon (an "activating" antipsychotic) which causes insomnia, but should allow me to lose a lot of the seroquel weight. wish me luck.

now suffering from insomnia again, my doctor has prescribed 12.5 mg. of ambien nightly and it works moderately well. BUT THIS is the drug that creates "hangover" for me.

are you dumping seroquel for the weight issue or because of the hangover effect? are you sure which drug is causing the hangover?

i'd like to hear? any insight anyone?

jt
