Hey! Sonata works OK...I think the dosage ranges from 5 mgs (for old people, kids, etc.) to 20mgs nightly. I took 20mgs, and it worked reasonably well. Ambien, however, worked much better: I went to sleep faster and stayed asleep, and woke up refreshed (as long as you sleep 7+ hours, daytime grogginess shouldn't be too much of a problem on Ambien). Ambien's dosing is much less flexible than that of Sonata: 5mgs for those with health conditions or old people, 10mgs for everybody else. Your doc might start you on 5 for a nite or two, then do 10 for a while, and then end the course of treatment with a few nites of 5mg doses.A couple people I know were treated this way, and it worked out well. Good luck!

hello there, chemist here.....anxiety_free is right on. sonata has a very very short elimination half-life and is prescribed for people who cannot fall asleep, but once they do, they generally stay so. ambien is longer-lasting, and is prescribed in lieu of benzos as the deep stages of sleep are preserved and ambien will not only put you to sleep, it will keep you asleep. depending on the dose of sonata, it is common to take another dose should you awaken in the middle of the night and have trouble going back to sleep....all the best, chemist

I've never taken Sonata. I have 10mg Ambien pills for when I cannot sleep. The doctor gave me five refills because I'm a chronic insomniac. He told me not to take them too often. I find that when I take Ambien I have deeper and more long lasting sleep. I used to take Klonopin 1mg at night. I find that Ambien works better for me as an anxiety-reducing/sleep inducing agent for night-time.
