I was just pondering about my de-realization bouts that I get every now and then, which I considered part of my GAD (my feeling of not being "there", of floating above myself or about to faint).It often happens in stores with a myriad of fluoresecent lights.
Since the only med that has worked for me is Klonopin, which is prescribed for seizures too, maybe it works cuz I AM having mini-seizures or seizure-like brain excitablity??? Does that relate to the constant anxiety that is GAD??Anyone have any theories out there?

> Thanks, JasYes, I believe derealization and/or depersonalization syndromes are subsyndromal epilepsy....the problem is they are created from functional and not structural problems in the brain, and hence not observable by modern brain imaging techniques.
However one with these conditions should definately get a sleep deprived EEG, to rule out full blown TLE.
I have much more to say on this issue, but i gotta get home!!
BTW, Nardil works great from general anxiety AND depersonalization/derealisation!

Aagh! What you wrote just got me more interested, in what else you might have to say on this subject, if you had more time! You're a tease!!
When, and if you have more time to expand on your theory, I would LOVE to read it!
Haven't tried Nardil yet, just sticking to Klonopin at the moment, after trying 5 meds in 16 months!!

It sure can. I was told that my derealization could be a problem with sub-seizure like activity in the temporal lobes. I was prescribed tegrotol which sure made me feel real, but it made me very very depressed. It is kind of like my imagination keeps me happy, but when I am exposed to the reality of the situation I become dull and apathetic. Just my take.

Thanks. I believe derealization/depersonaliztion represent problems with the anterior cingulate gyrus....I believe the concentrations of transmitters is WAY out of wack in those areas. Brain Imaging has shown that that area of the brain, is where we feel the 'I' in ourselves- our identity. It is the point of reference from which WE experience things...for example when we say "MY head is sore" or I"M feeling tired"...it is that 'I' im talking about.Depersonalization/derealization also correlate strongly with phobic anxiety....hence I believe their is GABA problems which can be alleviated with benzos (ie Xanax)
