Sweats on Effexor

Posted by Sandbob on May 17, 2004, at 20:10:48

I hear what you are all saying, and it sounds as though it could get better with time; however, I am experiencing severe sweating. One of the reasons I was switched to the Effexor was to try to combat the hot flashes, but now they are worse. I also feel as though my heart is racing. Maybe I put on some weight with the paxil, but thought it was for other reasons, and it wasn't much. Did any of you experience the sweats?

Yes - and they felt different from night sweats in that they seemed to be restricted to my head and neck rather than my whole body.

Yup! I did.....clammy sweats and mostly at night. They stopped after I got off the med.

If I ever thought the hot flashes were bad, this was ten times worse. I have called the Dr. and I am going to start the taper back to the Paxil today. I wonder if the Effexor would be a good drug for me while I am going through some bad life issues having lost my husband and my dad very recently, and also having suffered from mild depression all my life; however, I worry about it being too strong for me, and the long term affects, not to mention these sweats. I know I am not giving it time, but I think I will go back to the Paxil. I did gain weight over the past years, and attributed it to estrogen. If it was the paxil, it has not been that much. What are the incidences of weight gain with effexor. I never noticed major weight gain with the paxil.

I might add that I was on Zoloft for a few years, and my Dr. switched me to Paxil because he said that it didn't stay in one's system as long as the Zoloft, so it was easier to get off. I never had problems with the paxil, although lately I thought I needed something more.

I experienced night sweats a few times. My reason for stopping the effexor was an increased heartrate (100 bpm) most all time. John

I am glad you said that because yesterday I felt like my heart was coming out of my chest. I do have extra beats and take atenolol for that, so you can well imagine how I felt with the heart beating even faster. That was one of the things I told the Dr. yesterday. The more I hear, the more I want to get off this med. I hope I am not over reacting

The effexor worked very well for me while I was at a constant dose. Good luck. John

I took the effexor today, and this afternoon I felt as though I was on speed. It is a nice change from being tired all the time on the paxil, but it did make me feel very strange. I dropped the script for the paxil at the drug store. I think I am going to start the taper tomorrow. Do you think I am doing the right thing? I have been very depressed due to personal issues, and think it was worse during the winter months of Jan. Feb. Mar. I really felt as though I needed help with my meds. I don't now if I should be giving the effexor more time.

I felt speedy for the first week and a half on Effexor but I feel pretty normal now. It has been just over 3 weeks...how long have you been on? I actually stayed at 37.5mg for almost 2 weeks before increasing to 75mg due to side effects. I wanted to see if they would subside at all before increasing. They did, a couple are lingering but...not too bad.

When I started effexor the doses were 37.5 for one week, 75mg for one month, then 150mg for a year. Each time I increased the dose I would have nausea, yawning, overall sick feeling, and then it would go away after my body adjusted to the dose, usually a week. John

Do you think it helped you John? Would you take it again. I think I understood that you are not longer taken effexor. What type of meds do you take in its place.

Sorry if this goes through twice. I started the taper from Paxil to Effexor on 4/30/04. 7 days later, I started the Effexor only at 75 mg. I continue on the 75mg and have been now for 11 days. I just refilled the Paxil to begin the taper back to it; however, I wonder if it is the right thing to do. I don't like the sweats with Effexor, but I don't like the tiredness with Paxil. What do you think? Any suggestions?

Effexor definately helped me. The only reason that I stopped taking the drug was because I had a increased heart rate while on the medication. Prozac, helped during the weaning process of the effexor. Hope this helps you. John

I certainly don't want to get personal, but can you give me an idea of how it helped. What are you taking now? I haven't started the taper off yet, because maybe it will help me, too. I don't like the sweats though, and I wonder if the side effects will diminishl

My problem was that I had what seemed to be motion sickness. First, I couldn't ride in the car with someone else driving or fly in an aircraft, sit in church, eat in a resturant. The effexor got rid of these problems within a couple of weeks of taking the drug. The side effects from increasing the dosage went away after the dosage stabilized and my body got used to it (usually a week). Hope this helps. John
