Please Help me with Geodon!

Posted by Jubei on May 5, 2004, at 8:01:36

I am having a lot of trouble with Geodon. First of all, I missed a dose of it a few weeks ago and the sudden shock to my body of not having it gave me a really horrible panic attack, and my anxiety has been really high ever since taking it. The only problem is is that it seems impossible for me to stop taking it cold turkey because the withdrawal is an extremely scary experience, and I really hate geodon. Is there a way to taper off of it by taking smaller doses ever week? Or can you dilute the capsules in water? Thanks.

Talk to your doc, of course, since he may be able to give you an add-on to either improve the Geodon experience or the withdrawal from it. It should help to taper, though, and you can break the capsules and dump some out. You can actually lick it off your fingers since it has practically no taste. How long have you been on it? Has it been any help at all?

I have been taking it for four weeks. It was given to me to help with anxiety but it has just made it much worse and is why I don't want to be on it. It messes up sleep patterns, for instance, I only had about an hour of sleep last night. I have to get off of the medicine though because I believe it is sustaining the anxiety I have, and the only way is by tapering off because if I just stop taking it I get panic attacks, crying a lot, feeling like i'm going crazy, etc. It also gives me muscle twitches and dilated pupils which makes me senstive to light. I'm actually scared because I am not sure if these symptoms will go away. I had a bad panic attack with the medicine and during the attack I got depersonalization which is a feeling of being outside your body and it is very disturbing. I regret taking the medicine.

Sorry you're having so many problems. I had a similar experience with geodon and a TCA just recently. After a week of dosing I had daily panic attacks, akathesia and crying fits. When I stopped Geodon I increased my zyprexa. it helped a lot. The Zyprexa is very sedating for me but it has put the reigns on my problems. Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.

I had similar problems with Geodon and had to stop taking it. It was great for my thought disorder, but I have GAD also, and it made that much worse. The withdrawal wasn't as bad for me, though. I just cut it off cold turkey - well I guess it was pretty bad, but it only lasted about 2 days, so I was able to handle it ok. I switched to respirdal, and have been pretty happy with it.

Hello,

You can and should taper off slowly, hopefully with a doctor's advice.

When taken regularyly, antipsychotics tend to increase the number of dopamine receptors in the brain, as the brain compensates for the dopamine-blocking action of AP's.

Going off an AP suddenly can cause a "dopamine overload" that can cause all sorts of weird symptoms.

The solution is to ALWAYS taper when going off an AP. That will let your brain get used to the normal (unmedicated) amounts of dopamine stimulation.

Hope this helps.

Jubei, I am currently on Geodon, Lamictal and xanax. This combo is helping me with anxiety, bipolar, and fibromyalgia. I'm not sure what your dx was besides anxiety but most people can't take only one drug alone, they need a combo or cocktail. You should take the Geodon early in the evening around 6;00pm if you go to bed around 10:00 or 11:00pm. This helped me. You also need to see a Psychiatrist for these right med combos not just a GP.Hope you get this and can help. Latina
