Pdoc took me off Klonopine cold turkey. Worried

Posted by hundredhugs on April 30, 2004, at 21:16:00

I was taking 2mg of klonopine at night for sleep and have for a good 2 years. I made the comment that i skipped the klonopine 3 nights ago because a new med was making me so fatigued. I thought by skipping one med that makes me sleepy (klonopine) I might be able to function the following day. Well, It helped. I told my pdoc and she said if it worked let's do it. Before when I was going to off klonopine (which we didn't do) she made up a schedule to taper off it. She didn't do it this time and I didn't think anything of it until now. I feel very disconnected and foggy. What symptoms are related to klonopine withdrawl?

Thanks

Symptoms of cold turkey withdrawl are a rebound of the symptoms you had before you took it; i.e., anxiety to a level you haven't experienced in some time if that was your problem before.

Your PD doc is a little aggressive in stopping cold turkey. I suspect she thought you had resolved the issues causing you to take is all of a sudden.

I'd suggest a new PD doc.

chemist here...2 mg hs is not insignificant. nor is it appropriate therapy for insomnia. you need a gradual taper, as with any bezo or derivitave...for insomnia, my prefereence is zolpidem (ambien in the US). you can taper of klonopin over a 3-4 week period while titrating ambien.....hope this helps, and let me know, all the best, chemist

How long do I have to worry about withdrawls? (nm)

I'd say that 3-4 weeks is nowhere near enough for a decrease from 2 mg. If you decrease at the rate of .25 mg./week (and even that might be too fast for some people), it would take a minimum of 8 weeks to complete the taper.

as with most things scientific, the answer is ``it depends.'' the bright light is that klonopin is not the nightmare that xanax or valium presents. as i have said before, taper *at you own pace*, and at your comfort level. your doctor might not agree, but it is your body, your mind, and your mental health. go down as much as you can tolerate, if there is rebound, bump-up slightly for a few days, then go down again. you are far from the xanax/valium and many SSRIs (first and second generation) withdrawl effects...please keep in touch, and all the best, chemist

thank you for insight and advice....given the cumulative date that suggest that klonopin at the 2 mg qd level is way short of valium/xanax/ativan, i believe your estimate for tapering is more accurate than mine....thank you, and i stand corrected, all the best, chemist
