If it works for you, then yes, there are positives to it. It's like most anti-depressants: it works for some people, not for others. So, if it works for you, then it has positive qualities. If it doesn't work, then it's probably not positive.
Now that I've said that, when I started it, it relieved my anxiety and helped me relax and rest. It was never particularly effective for my depression, but life was bearable for me with the addition of Prozac.
Unfortunately, it stopped working for me -- which is pretty common with anti-depressants -- and withdrawal isn't a lot of fun, but if you have a good pdoc whom you trust, it's well worth giving it a try. It wasn't as problematic a drug for me as some others had been, which is positive, and it didn't have as many side effects as other drugs did.
Good luck.

I'm on 375mg of Effexor XR and it's working pretty well. Still having some break-through anxiety and sexual annoyances, but that's it. I've read a lot of posts on this board from people who have had bad reactions to Effexor - but no problems with me. Of course going off of Effexor or any anti-depressant for that matter is always horrible unless you taper REALLY REALLY slowly.
Hope this helps.Jerry

Effexor XR worked well on my anxiety and depression but since I couldn't tolerate a higher dose I'm on 75mg and added wellbutrin. I have mixed feelings about how that one is going.
Everyone is different but I think you need to give any particular medication a chance.

Well, for me 300mg of Effexor XR + 20mg Celexa does the trick. The worst signs of depression are going away ... now I only pray that it doesn't poop out on me.

It was the first med to not poop out on me, fwiw. I have been on a steady dose for a long time.

I like it, it pulled me out of a dark hole. I have been taking it for about 6 months.
Cheers,
