I'm currently taking zoloft at 75mg for depression. Based on what I've found on the internet, I'm beginning to suspect that I have some form of bipolar disorder. I've also heard that zoloft can trigger mania in a bipolar person. If taking zoloft for a few weeks hasen't triggered any mania yet, is it safe to say that I'm not bipolar?

Not necessarily. I am Bipolar II and I take Zoloft. I haven't had any problem with it causing mania. HOWEVER, I do take it with a mood stabilizer. I can't tolerate antidepressants without a mood stabilizer, as they DO then make me manic.

Hi, I was diagnosed as bipolar after taking lexapro for about 3 months. I felt great for those three months and then started becoming manic. I've heard of people taking an SRI for a lot longer than that before causing mania.

Well, I was on zoloft for a few years as teen for OCD. I don't remember any violent manic episodes during that time period. Before starting the zoloft again for depression, I was put on prozac. This caused intense anxiety and perhaps hypomania to some degree. I have yet to experience these side effects on zoloft (then again, I also have yet to see much of an improvement).

Hi,
I've been dxed as BPII and I was on Zoloft for three months and it made me a ZOMBIE. I went thru' a trial and error for one year w/ ADs. The ones I went HYPO on were Effexor and Serzone. Celexa and Zoloft did nothing for me. The way I guessed I was BP was my last bout w/ Serzone - I went weeeee high. SO in my case, sometimes when ADs do nothing at all, it's an indication of BP.

I had similar experiences. I took Zoloft for several years for OCD before being diagnosed as BpI. I eventually got into a mixed state and was very manic. I now take Lexapro and a mood stabilizer. They definitely warn taking SSRI's and other AD's alone if you have bp. Jenn
