Lexapro/Wellbutrin combo, not working

Posted by TexasChic on March 9, 2004, at 13:49:30

I've been on Lexapro for 4+ months now, and all I do is cry all the time. My doc put me on Wellbutrin a few weeks ago, and while it helps with the tiredness and lack of motivation, it doesn't effect my depression. I went to my doc yesterday & told her I wanted back on the Prozac (what I was taking before) because I can't stand feeling this way. She originally took me off Prozac because I was having panic attacks, & she says Prozac is stimulating. The thing is, when I went on a less stimulating SSRI before (Paxil) I felt this way. So I'm thinking I need the 'stimulating' kind for my depression (its always been bad). I think the panic attacks were more related to the things going on in my life than the Prozac (I'd been on it five years and was doing fine). Her answer yesterday was for me to try higher doses of Wellbutrin (300 mg) and Lexapro (30 mg). She did say she would switch me back if the increases don't do the job. If anyone has a similar experience or any advice, let me know.

Hi TexasChic,

I'm sorry to hear that the Lexapro isn't working for you. I was on 40 mgs of Prozac for quite a while and like you I have found that Lex isn't quite as "activating" as Prozac. (On my next pdoc visit I'm going to ask about adding Wellbutrin.)

The increase might do the trick in helping your depression. I hope you start to see positive results soon. When I increased, it really helped. I went from 10 mgs to 15 mgs and it seems to have done the trick.

If the increase doesn't work for you, I would suggest going back to Prozac and taking a benzo on an as needed basis i.e. whenever you have a panic attack. Xanax, Klonopin, Lorazepam etc...all of those meds can really do wonders when you're having a panic attack.

Best of luck!

K.

Years a go, when I took Prozac, it was too activating for me. I now take 30 mg Lexapro along with 150 mg Wellbutrin XL and am doing very well.

If you do not have success with your increased doses, maybe you can ask the doc about going back to Prozac along with an anxiety drug to take as needed for panic attacks.

Well, I've been on the higher dose of Wellbutrin for a week (300mg) and I feel worse than ever. I can't seem to stop crying! It also seems like my life is just crashing in on me. Everything is going wrong! My closest friend got a boyfriend and now its been 4 months since I've seen or heard from her. I wrote her an email to tell her she obviously has no need for me or our friendship anymore, and she wrote back that she's just so busy and that she has felt responsible for everyone else's happiness for so long that now its her turn. Then she said I was too dependent on our friendship and should make new friends. I wrote back to tell her I didn't mean to be such a burden on her and that she obviously didn't feel the same about our friendship as I did, so I'm just going to move on. And now I'm just heartbroken. On top of that I'm in a terrible living situation, I'm broke and about to file bankruptcy, and I went to the dentist yesterday and he told me I needed $6000 of work done and its all urgent. So, if anyone is still reading, I don't know how to judge how my meds are working when everything is going so wrong. I also don't know if I'm making everything worse because my meds aren't working. I am just so depressed I wish my life was over already. Why is life so hard? The only thing keeping me here is my little nephew who I love and who needs me. I'm sorry this is so long.
