Has ANYONE'S doctor warned about Effexor withdrawl

Posted by BJlass on February 15, 2004, at 16:09:20

I'm curious how many posters to this board who have been prescribed Effexor were WARNED by the doctors concerning:

1. The side effects
2. The withdrawal difficulties

I have a feeling it's a very low amount and I, for one, would like to know WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need to DEMAND to know why doctors kept this information from us!

Yes. I was warned, but I thought that withdrawal would be minimized because I tapered very slowly. No such luck. Or maybe the withdrawal *was* minimized, and I got lucky because I was utterly incapacitated for only 3 days.

Thsi was a while ago, but I do remember that my doc said it comes out of your system real quick, so if you miss a dose by more than 12-24 hours youre going to know about it. Nothing about the difficult withdrawl. Although it should be pointed out that its not an issue of your doc withholding info or for that matter the pharm companies withholding info. When this drug was first developed everyone new that in some cases "ssri induced withdrawl effects" were common - it just wasnt a focus of the clinical trial process. They were more concerned with whether the drug worked or not.

When my doc warned me, itwas kind of in a roundabout way. I told him I read a lot of nightmare stories about the drug and he said I must be talking about the "withdrawal syndrome". Then he wrote me a script for it. Sigh....

no, he didn't. and now he mostly acts like i'm some freak of nature or maybe it was all just caused by something else? awwwwg.

he got all upset about me taking vicodin (gotten from a pcp), then freaked me out making me think i was going to be addicted to it and would need to taper off. THEN he let my vicodin prescription run out! the day i went to pick it up they said no, he said not to release it until the next day. it was 4:45, so i spent the rest of the evening imagining i was going to get all sick again. WHOOPS! i was fine! i hadn't become dependent on the vicodin in the least.

and there you have one more reason i don't trust my doctor anymore. i guess now he'll have to try again to get me sick...

I was actually wanred by my doctor that effexor can be difficult, however, I had taken Paxil a year prior and I thought getting off Effexor would be a piece of cake as oppossed to the Paxil... Boy was I wrong. In my case, getting off the effexor has been a long term, frustrating ordeal. I thought I was in the clear after being off it 3 months but then low and behold, I've had rebound problems (severe anxiety, everything making me tweak out, etc). I'm hoping some cognitive therapy will help me out of the rebound periods and bring me back to the person I was! Just goes to show that all of these meds are so different, and outright frustrating.

No! My doctor never said a word to me. And this was only about 6-8 months ago and I am taking 300mg. I only learnt about it on this web site and am so pissed you can't imagine! I've printed a couple ofpostings to show her next time I see her I'm going tobe giving her an ear full.

I freaked trying toget offSerzone so I evenmore scared now when I heard fromyou all that Effexor will stop working eventually and I willhave to wean myself into a 'descent into hell'.

Oh joy.

My doctor warns me about the withdrawal effects every time I start Effexor, but I have never experienced a single problem with stopping its use--even cold turkey after taking it for over a year.

I was NOT warned. I had never taken an antidepressant in my life and was too ignorant to be concerned. (Effexor was supposed to be something to "pick me up" post partum.) That was back when I trusted Drs. Anyway, I am now in week two of the living hell of my own personal effexor withdrawal. If she had even hinted at this, I would have NEVER taken this drug. I just found out two days ago that withdrawal was the reason I wrecked my truck and fell into a wall while holding my infant (extreme, sudden dizziness) All this time I had been looking up "inner ear infection."
