New to Klonopin for sleep

Posted by Jayslace on February 2, 2004, at 20:37:27

Hi all! Can any one tell me how soon to take Klonopin at night for sleep? I guess I just want to know how soon it starts working usually.
My doctor started me on it today, and tonight is my first. Little scared , ya know? O.5mg.
Any more info would be great!!
Take care everybody!!

I found that it kicks in pretty quickly, almost as fast as an aspirin for headache, i.e. about 45 minutes-1 hr. Depending on the level of your insomnia, you might find that 0.5 mg. is a bit too much if you sleep well but wake up feeling very drowsy. So you can experiment and see how you do with a lower dose.

Hi Ruthie,

I started on Klonopin over 3 years ago to stop nighttime panic attacks brought on by startup side effects of Effexor. I was so afraid to try Klonopin because I did not know how it would make me feel. I take 1 mg. every night and most nights I sleep great. It does not come on suddenly and for me it just relaxes me and makes me sleepy. I take it at 9PM and then I am ready for bed about 10:30. I can understand how scary it is to take a new medication. I feel confident that you will find your sleep to be very peaceful.
The only thing you need to remember is that Klonopin stays in your system a long time, so don't take it too late in the evening. Let us know how you do. :) Laurie P.S. Many people take Klonopin during the day as well. Some say that the sedating effects wear off over time. For me, it is sedating which is exactly what I need at night.

AnneL and Cubbybear,
Thank you so much for the info! This will defininately help me after last night. I didn't take it till 10:30. Which meant I didn't get to sleep till around 12:30. My husband said I slept solid though and I felt like I did (he gets up and out to work by 7am). However, I'm up at 7:30 getting my 8 and 11 yr old rounding about for school. Then I take them to school.
Talk about groggy!!! They were looking at me and my oldest said,'Mom, did you sleep last night?' LOL
Again, thank you so much for your help!!!
I'm going to go lay back down for a little bit.
Peace to you all!
Ruthie
