risperdal withdrawl

Posted by andyAI on January 29, 2004, at 9:58:31

Since my last epsiode (and a mini one i had recently) my psychiatrist has told me that i have hypomania and *not* schizoprenia as i was first told however i am now begining to wonder if the hypomania that i experiance is due to withdrawl effects i take a very low dosage of my medication about one risperdal tablet every few week's (3 mg) and this eems to keep me stable. If i start to experiance any acceleration i take a 3mg doasage daily till the symptoms of my illness wear off and go back to taking the risperdal in the ad hoc way i usually do, i am wondering if i am addicted to the medication surely the amounts i am taking are bellow a theraputic level but if i don't take risperdal for about a couple or even a few months i start to get ill... how likely is it that i am addicted and is there any way to try and come off the medication? i know about the antimanic properties of risperdal but surely mania could be a side eefct of withdrawing from my medication...it doesn't make sense that my original illness has been replaced with different symptoms unless the episode's i had previously where mania and not schizophrenia... any advice on withdrawing from risperdal would be much appreciated and any information in regards to hypomania/mania being a side effect of comming off risperdal would be much appreciated thnx in advance :)

Antipsychotics can be powerful mood stabalizers for many people, even in low doses. It is fully possible that you can experience hypomania on withdrawl of 3mg of Risperdal.

Think of it this way. Risperdal blocks certain dopamine receptors. Kind of like an anti-cocaine effect. When you abruptly withdrawl, those previously blocked receptors suddenyl get a surge of dopamine, which can give you a real boost.

I find that when I am wired and a little bit hypomanic, I can calm down with only 0.25 mg of Risperdal.

Explain your idea to the doctor, and how the reintroducion of the medication brings sudden relief of symptoms.

Best of Luck
