Anyone lost any vision using SSRI's ?

Posted by laurenn on January 15, 2004, at 18:04:55

Has anyone also lost any vision from the use of an SSRI ? Please write back. I lost some of my peripheral vision from use of SSRI over 2 and half years ago. Dr. said he had hoped vision would come back , but it never has. Also does it feel like also when you turn your head that information is not keeping up with the brain.Kinda like a weird eye to brain thing. I've heard of lot of reports of this feeling. And two of my friends suffered thru this , but theirs went away after discontinuing their ssri's immediately. They too, also said that they were losing their peripheral vision it felt like. Well,
Mine never went away. Dr. thinks something happened permanently to neuronal misfiring in brain to cause this. Also, i'd like to know if anyone has had PERMANENT muscle rigidity from SSRI use ? Mine is Permanent in shoulders & hands.

Hi there:

I, thankfully, did not suffer the peripheral vision problems you report, but I definitely have suffered permanent muscle rigidity, pain, spasm, and neuropathy problems. I just went through a full battery of neurological tests with my neurologist and he found nothing wrong and we reached the conclusion that my symptoms are lingering effects from the meds.

I also have short term memory deficiencies and my anxiety is significantly worse than pre-treatment levels. While some people may have no problems with these drugs, the risk of permanent deleterious effects is enough to convince me that these drugs should only be used as a very last resort when all other treatment modalities have failed.

Have you tried having 2-3 months of regular chiropractic adjustments? I find it does help while I'm going through withdrawals (and having tingling, numbness and some vision issues). The adjustments help keep the nerve pathways open. I would accompany it with regular massages to remove any tension from your muscles. It's sad that the drugs have left you with difficulties. I pray that it doesn't last and that you, and all of us, will find our path back to good health. What I find appalling and shocking about the meds is that I only took the Zoloft for about a month. The stuff is bad, bad, bad. I think most people should just use natural remedies, go to hypnosis, etc... when they are anxious. The meds should be rarely used when really needed.

You may be depleated of tryptophan. Sometimes use of these medications can depleate neurotransmitter stores. You should try using 5-htp.

Just an Idea.

I have noticed narrow vision problems while I am on Celexa, but it seems to be ilimited with a 5-ht2a blocker.
