Lexapro? Paxil? Wellbutrin? AUUUGGHHH!

Posted by MW on December 30, 2003, at 9:24:49

It seems I have been on a roller coaster of meds for the past few years. Can't seem to find the ONE for me. The lastest was Lexapro. My weight shot up quickly, even though my doc said the med had nothing to do with it. I slowly backed off that one, but have an appointment to get something else because I can barely make it through the days (weepy, angry, can't remember things or concentrate, not interested in anything). Now I am 20 pounds heavier and feeling terrible about myself. Any ideas of what might help, but not cause weight gain? What is the difference between Paxil and Lexapro?

I understand how do you feel as I'm same way in past years. my experience is : Lexapro made my anxety worth. Welllbutrin made me caugh non-stop. Paxil helped my anxiety, not like other people about weight gain, I don't have that problem, but Paxil made my brain foggy. also paxil give me immidate relive about depression ( at least don't want to die ).
I'm taking 12.5mg Paxil CR for about 4 days now.
I remember the day I start to take is the day I even couldn't get out the bed. I look at my draw and find the bottle of paxil, take one pill. I start feel better same day. sounds not make sense, but that is what happend to me. and went to docotor yesterday. He didn't want me to take paxil above what I current taken Klonopin and Topamax. He want me to do ECT. I think I'm going get second opinon about ECT.

Trying different meds can be SO frustrating, but it pays off when you finally find the right one. I'm surprised to hear that you've gained weight on lexapro, it killed my appetite. But these things effect everyone so differently.

I'm not sure what you were diagnosed with, but if it's depression (sounds like it) I would recommend Prozac if you haven't already tried it. The drug did wonders for me a few years ago and I had no trouble with weight gain. If I remember right loss of appetite is one of the side effects. Prozac really helped to get my mood swings under control, I had more energy and I was way more interested in what was going on around me.

Best of luck! (Keep us updated on your progress.)

I agree with the last post--Prozac lowered my appetite too, if I remember correctly. Paxil has been notorious for causing weight gain, so you may want to check out other options...Wellbutrin is commonly associated with weight loss, but if your problem is mainly associated with serotonin (which, I guess, mine seems to be), then Wellbutrin would probably not be a good choice, at least not by itself (it deals with norepinephrine and dopamine, not serotonin). Right now I am on Lexapro (10 mg.) and Wellbutrin SR (200 mg./day), and my appetite is almost null and void. I do have Seasonal aff. disorder though, so carb cravings are a big part of that in attempt to raise serotonin levels. Once I got on the Lex (recently), those cravings dropped off. I did notice, however, that it did seem to raise my appetite AT FIRST, but my WB had also recently been raised, and I think that the WB must have curbed any of that app. raise? Both my roommate and I are on this combo of meds. I have SAD/depression while she has anxiety problems and depression. The combination has worked well for both of us, and I have heard of many being on such a combination. Maybe you can ask your pdoc about adding Wellbutrin to an SSRI such as Prozac. Best of luck!!

You can add me to people taking that combo. I take 30 mg Lexapro along with 100 mg Wellbutrin. Doing good. Even when I was on Lexapro alone, I did not have an increased appetite or a weight gain.
