This is the first time I have used a message board. (If that's what you call this.) Anyway, I have had very unsuccesful treatment for major depression and possible atypical bipolar (bipolar type 3?) I am taking about 250 mg of Wellbutrin per day and only 1.25 mg Celexa in the evening (1/16 of a tablet). I've been on over 25 meds and about the same number of supplements over the past 15 years. Side effects are usually either sedation or agitation....Has anyone tried Celexa in such small amounts? Thanks very much.

I'm taking Wellbutrin (150SR) a day and 10mg or Celexa...or is it 20? Whatever one pill is...no sedation at all...in fact, I find both ADs to be energizing.

I took Celexa for years. If finally stopped working. Now I am using Wellbutrin. It is energizing for me but does very little to relieve my sadness.
Anyway, Celexa is a SSRI, so it helps out the Serotonin. Wellbutrin is NOT an SSRI, but it works on I think, the dopemine?
So the combination helps replace two of the four chemicals the brain needs to fight off depression.
Sounds to me like it's ok as long as it's working. Since your not taking two SSRIs you probably don't have to worry about Serotonin Syndrome--very bad stuff.
So give it a shot. The Celexa might be calming, the Wellbutin, energizing--but watch out for increased anxiety from the Wellbutrin. That's a common side-effect. It usually goes away, but if it doesn't then it's probably not the drug to use or try a lower dose. (I'd stay away from Effexor though, it can be very nasty.)

I'm very confident that your dose of Celexa is doing nothing.

Yes, celexa is a very potent SSRI, I can feel the benefit on as low as 5 mg. Take as little as is beneficial.

>Thank you for your helpful response and thanks to others for responding... I've heard of a lab test called the cyp2d6 genotype test that is supposed to provide information on how you may metabolize certain meds. Has anyone had this done? It doesn't seem to be readily available.--V.S.
