Professional Cyclothymics?? Help Please

Posted by azsteve on November 18, 2003, at 0:30:18

Hello everyone,
I am really concerned at this point of my life. I am 22, taking 50mg Zoloft but am thinking I'm having some rapid cycling(cyclothymic). There are days when I just seem to get extremely stressed out, extremely easily. I can't get any respect at work because of it and I'm trying to enter a professional career soon but am not mentally ready. I guess I'm wondering if any of you are professionals and taking medications (which ones) for cyclothymia. I struggle alot but pass my classes and function otherwise and I just need to find out here. My first visit to a therapist is in 2 days. Any input is helpful.
Thanks,
Steve

Relax, make a list of what you want to talk about with your new therapist starting with what you are most concerned about. God bless you! Let me know how it turns out.

If you experience rapid cycling then you need to be on a mood stabilizer, period. The Zoloft is an antidepressant and will exacerbate the rapid cycling if taken alone.

Hello. You didn't mention how long you've been on Zoloft. If the cycling continues, you might want to ask your doc about a mood stabilizer. I am an Electrical Engineer. I am currently med free, but at one point I was on a cocktail of Neurontin 800mgx4/day, 200mg Topomax, 300mg Effexor Xr, & .5 Klonopin prn. While taking these I could function at my job. Without the meds I would of been unable to work at all. It might take some time & trials to find the right meds/dose. Good luck.

You guys are all really helpful and thanks for the feedback, really. (about a year kid) I went to the therapist today for the first time. Being I can be introverted when stressed and an only child I knew it would be help alot and did. So far she got my history, I teared and we're to meet next week. Being I've got a history of constant moving, some vague memories, and other smaller family issues, she thinks it might just be a buildup of emotions and stress as far as the mood swings. I hope so but am just not sure yet. I want her to see me on a "stressed" day and see what she thinks. I'm hopeful though and if it is a mood thing than I'll take the meds and I know soon there's going to be a cure for all this to where we can all be med-free. Kid, how such a drop in meds?
Hope to all and I'll keep you posted. Thanks,
Steve

<<Kid, how such a drop in meds?>>

After finding a med cocktail that worked (it took a while) I began to make lifestyle changes. I gave up booze,
caffeine & nicotine. Not all at once but gradually over about a years time. I changed my diet, started getting some exercise, made sure to get enough rest & began taking different supplements. (I'm not trying to sell anything) I was in therapy twice a week for a while. After 13 months of this I decided I felt well enough to try & stop my meds. I stopped in stages. I quit Topamax first. Then I began to taper off the FXR. I took my time with that. Then I stopped the Neurontin & finally the Klonopin (although I still take it on occassion)
I still have some pretty rough days. I have at times considered going back on the meds. I am not the happiest camper, but I am a WHOLE LOT better than I was & I don't have to put up with the #$$@%& side fx most psych-meds cause. If it wasn't for the meds I would never have been able to even consider making some of the changes in my life style. This is NOT a plan for recovery for anyone else. This is just my(waaay too long) story. Aren't you glad you asked? =0/ Take care.
