How to Counteract Anticholinergic Effects of ADs

Posted by dannen on October 28, 2003, at 21:03:05

How does one counteract the anticholinergic effects of ADs--especially ones causing constipation or dry mouth (e.g., TCAs)?

Exercise and increasing fiber and water intake helps, but are there any other aids? I have read online that oyal jelly helps, but is that just a plug from a health product rep? What works for people?

The dry mouth is a real bother, too. I have seen artificial saliva in the drug store. Does it work? Any gums that work well? I guess I'll stick to lemon water.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Hi dannen, I've heard about some things, maybe you can give one of them a try:
Biotene Dry Mouth Gum: It is supposed to relieve oral dryness, doesn't stick to dental work, it comes in sugar free, and you get like 16 pieces in a pack. (Mint too)
I think that the saliva sprays might work, but only short-term, it depends on what you're looking for, maybe you want short-term relief.
There is also something called 'Salix' that stimulates natural saliva. It's an OTC product with safe GRAS (Generally Recogonized As Safe) ingredients that enhance natural saliva stimulation. It's a lozenge, and works locally and works fast.
Hope this helped.
Good luck!
Kristen
