Rash on breasts, side effect of WB XL???

Posted by otrqt on October 25, 2003, at 9:30:46

I've been on 300mg XL for 3 days (was 150mg for 1 wk prior) and am coming down from Effexor XR (currently on 37.5). Yesterday I noticed after working all day that my breasts were itchy. Didn't pay much attention to it, but today I noticed a slight red/rash on both breasts. My first thought was that it must be the bra, but it's not new, detergents the same.
Ever heard of that being a side effect?

I would be interestd in anyone's response to this as well...I was on Wellbutrin SR for a year. Got an itchy rash on the front of my lower leg, an area of about 1" x3".....stopped Wellbutrin in July and the rash is still there. I thought it was the wellbutrin that did it, because in the past when I have taken drugs that I am sensitive or allergic to, I get the itchy rash in the same spot (previously when I took sulfa antibiotics and a diuretic, so I stopped immediately with these drugs)....I liked how the Wellbutrin helped me, so I did not quit taking it for a year. Last month, I showed the rash to my doctor and he said, "no, it's not the Wellbutrin, it's a nervous rash" - (whatever THAT is!) and gave me samples of elidel to use on it 2x daily it has not helped...I am considering now going to the dermatologist with it - seems to me to be dermatitis. Interested in anything anyone can add about a rash from Wellbutrin, because I have found nothing to say it was caused by WB, but still I think it was! Janis

The purple dye has been the reason for causing rashes with Wellbutrin SR 150mg tablets, it's documented and I also had a small itchy rash when I was taking it. As for Wellbutrin XL, I have no idea because I am now taking it which has no dyes and I've had no rash from it.

Do you know where that documentation is? I hit Google looking for it and could only find a couple of posts on this board about it. I would like to see that information. Thanks.

I found it on the internet and can't remember where, but the best thing to do would be to call Glaxo, not that they will jump out and just tell you but their number is 919-483-2100. I've called with questions before and they're pretty informative.

Just as a side note, as you mentioned, when you have an allergic reaction to a drug, the rash will occur in the same place every time. Weird, huh? Elidel might help, but not if the cause is still unknown... it might make it worse! Elidel is a newer topical that is kinda a "for just about any skin condition" med. If it is very bothersome, do see a dermatologist. pdocs specialize in that area for a reason and that's what they do best. Think about this, would you ask a dermatologist why you can't stop crying or why you feel like punching a whole in the wall... and expect a reasonable, well-educated response? So think vice versa now. Good luck with you decision. Oh, and I've never have any rashes or other reactions to WB SR or XL.

Thanks for everyone's input. I called Glaxo and they were very interested and took down lots of info. They said they are required by the FDA to report any possible problems. They "advised" me to call my Dr. (which I had already done) and that their recommendation to the Dr would be to stop it immediately. As I am feeling great and the rash hasn't spread (nor gone away), I was leary to stop it, and luckily when the Dr. called me back today, he said to continue it as long as the rash wasn't getting worse.
Again, thanks for your input.
