What's a good substitute for Zyprexa?

Posted by Sebastian on September 8, 2003, at 21:03:22

I like the calmness, the ability to sleep, ability to eat.

I don't have these things when I stop the zyprexa, also I don't want to be so dependant on Zyprexa. For these reasons I don't trust taking it anymore. Also zyprexa side-effects are getting worse.

I would be curious if anyone has a good switch medicine. I've taken this zyprexa for over 5 years now, feeling that I should stop taking it.

PS: No Abilify substitute for Zyprexa works?

What else works in place of zyprexa

I've tried: Risperdal, Abilify, depakote.

Hey Seb, only you can choose, but in my humble opinion, I really liked Seroquel, it helped me A LOT! Maybe it will help you!
Good luck:-)

I thought Seroquel had a short half life like Geodon?

I take my Seroquel in 3 doses - 100mg at breakfast, 100mg at lunch, and 600mg at dinner. I have been on this dosage for about a year now and it has worked wonders for me. Oh, I also take a 100mg tablet occasionally for anxiety.

Peace,
Dane =)

I took Geodon for a year and it caused really bad parkinson-like muscle spasms and problems. However, it was great since I didn't have weight gain problems. No one believed the problems were from Geodon until I got off of it and switched to Serequel and the problems went away. I got on Serequel very gradually - 8 weeks to get up to 200 mg. I am fine on it. When I was on Geodon, they put me on 160mg - max dose in 3 days which was probably way more than I can handle. I take all of the Serequel at night, as it makes me feel drugged even after taking it for 7 months, but it wears off by morning. I would recommend slowly switching at a pace you are comfortable, rather than someone pushing you up to a higher dose than you might need quickly which might cause you to give up on the drug before you give it a chance. Serequel has not caused weight gain problems either, however it does not suppress appetite quite like the Geodon.

Both drugs haven't impaired my cognitive ability in work or school or motivation to work hard at whatever I decide to accomplish. However, I have taken drugs which made me feel like eating and sleeping and nothing else.

I vote for Serequel, but do what you think is best for you. Hope this helps.

Cybercafe:

When I took Depakote, I was really out of it and did poorly in school - big weight gain. Zyprexa and Risperdal made me feel like a zombie and couldn't stop eating and sleeping.

Lamictal was ok for me cognitively, but it messed with my distance vision and didn't help with being manic. Geodon was fine for me cognitively, but it caused muscle spasms. Now I am on Serequel, doing fine. But the first week I was taking it, it would cause my arms and legs to go numb (kind of like they were falling asleep) but that went away soon after.

My biggest problem with sticking with a drug has always been if it caused weight gain I would stop taking it. Lamictal, Serequel, and Geodon appeared to be more weight neutral.

A lot of what I experienced could be due to how high of a dose I was taking, and my own reaction to the drugs. But everyone is different and has to find what works for them.

Lisa
