I recently started Effexor during a week long hospital stay to step me off of Paxil. Previously, meds were 60mg Paxil, .5mg Klonopin, and 200mg trazadone.
Now I'm on 225mg Effexor, and after becoming extremely sad I added Klonopin back at night to sleep.
I've been diagnosed with major depression for a year now and have had several week long stays and a number of ER visits. One of my biggest problems besides the seemingly unshakable depression is dealing with bouts of rage which are out of character as well as out of proportion to the stimulus.
The other evening I walked some rage off--took 2 hours. A day or so later I was distraught and took Klonopin to sleep.
The meds seem to work for awhile, then the sadness returns. I came very close to suicide on Paxil several times, and even attempted shortly after first being prescribed it. Though I've fought depression a good part of my life, I'm surprised at how resistant it is to modern medicine and how much more debilitating it is for me now than it was in youth. It's frightening.
I'm also extremely concerned about the rage, and wonder if there are any meds I should consider to help with this. Currently, my lover refuses to sleep in the same bed with me as I become violent while asleep. I scream and curse, and several times I have grabbed her hair and attempted to punch her. Today she and a friend woke me up from the couch where I had fallen asleep reading. I was screaming and cursing.

Sorry that I don't really have the time at the moment to respond in more detail, but some options for treatment of aggression are mood-stabilizing medications (especially Depakote) and beta-blockers (though taking into consideration your serious depression as well as the propensity of beta-blockers to cause depression, I'd advise against them). I personally found Depakote helped a very great deal a few years ago when I was constantly having adolescence-induced outbursts of anger.
