Anti-psychotics and diabetes

Posted by Dinah on August 15, 2003, at 17:45:18

From what I can tell, all the atypicals look bad for diabetics. Does anyone know if there are any that aren't? My pdoc doesn't seem to know anything about diabetes, and while I'll start checking around next week for one who does, it's not that easy to find pychiatrists.

I've been sneaking Risperdal as needed though I'm supposed to switch to Seroquel. Neither sounds good for diabetes though. And Seroquel sounds just too sedating.

I think I might like to take one at a very low dose on a regular basis rather than taking it as needed, but that won't be possible if it's going to worsen my diabetes. (My diabetic boss says just take the darn things and start taking insulin, but that prospect does not appeal.)

Not all atypicals are bad for diabetics. Ziprasidone (Geodon) should be first choice if concern is causing or worsening diabetes. Of course, it has its own side effects.

Thanks. :)

I'll look that up and have the information ready for my next appointment. Or my new appointment. Whichever comes first.

Dr Bob had a Doc of nutrition here as a guest, who posted quite a bit on this issue. Does anyone remember this persons name ?
